Tottenham Hotspur has officially announced a new long-term contract with Micky van de Ven, solidifying his position as a cornerstone of the club’s defense for the next decade. The Netherlands international joined from Wolfsburg in 2023, initially on a six-year agreement until 2029, a deal that proved crucial to Van de Ven’s decision to extend his stay in London.
Originally on a six-year agreement until 2029, Van de Ven initially considered his future in north London before the appointment of Roberto de Zerbi in March, a decision that proved pivotal to his decision to extend his stay in Tottenham. He has consistently delivered, contributing significantly to Spurs’ success during the 25-year-old’s tenure.
Van de Ven’s influence extended beyond simply maintaining his position as a vital defender. He was instrumental in Tottenham’s Europa League triumph in 2025, captaining the side during the final six matches of last season as they narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League.
“I’ve always loved Spurs, from the first day I stepped in here,” said Van de Ven. “I love the club, I love the fans, and I’ve developed really well here. It’s clear the direction the club wants to go in, and I want to be a part of it,” he added.”
Spurs boss De Zerbi lauded Van de Ven as “one of the best centre-backs in Europe and an important player for us.” The Italian manager described him as “a key asset” and emphasized the club’s commitment to retaining a player of his caliber.
Van de Ven has made 96 appearances in all competitions since arriving from the Bundesliga, with 24 caps for the Netherlands, representing the nation at the World Cup this summer. He has consistently delivered, earning praise for his defensive solidity and tactical intelligence.
Tottenham have finished 17th in back-to-back seasons and narrowly avoided relegation on the final day of 2025-26. Despite this disappointing season, the club has spent £237 million this summer, including a club record £100 million to sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle.
“Unhappy Tottenham players should leave – De Zerbi,” stated Tottenham’s manager. “Van de Ven is a valuable asset to the club and he will continue to play a key role in our future success.”
Van de Ven has posted on Instagram to express his contentment with his training and to highlight his commitment to the team. He wrote, “Feeling good after another good session today with the team," and “Working so hard to be healthy and have a great year. Definitely haven’t had any recurrence of any injury I’ve had before.”
De Zerbi has expressed confidence in Van de Ven’s continued contribution, stating that he is “a key part of our future” and that the club is “building something strong here.”
