A devastating 7.4-magnitude earthquake has struck western Colombia, plunging the region into chaos and prompting widespread evacuations across both countries. The tremor, centered near San Jose del Palmar in Colombia’s Choco region, approximately 400km (250 miles) west of Bogota, was detected by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and Colombia’s geological service around 10:00 AM local time on Monday, October 28, 2023. The USGS initially reported a 6.6 magnitude quake, but subsequent analysis indicates a more significant event.

The epicenter of the quake was located approximately 107 kilometers (65 miles) below the surface, deep within the Earth’s crust, according to the USGS report. The earthquake struck at a depth of about 107 kilometers (66 miles), which is significantly below the surface, allowing for a relatively gentle downward movement that caused widespread ground shaking.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed that the quake was felt across Colombia, neighboring countries, and even parts of Ecuador, triggering immediate alerts and prompting emergency response teams to assess the impact. The USGS issued a tsunami warning for the Pacific Ocean, but the seismic activity was not sufficient to generate a significant tsunami wave.

Choco Governor Nubia Cordoba addressed the public on X, stating that the quake caused significant damage and injuries in the capital, Quibdo, and surrounding areas. She emphasized that authorities are conducting a comprehensive damage assessment and will release a detailed report shortly. Initial reports indicate significant structural damage to buildings in Quibdo, including collapsed structures and widespread debris.

The earthquake’s impact has been felt across Colombia and Ecuador, with authorities urging residents to remain vigilant and to heed warnings. Emergency teams, including the Colombian military and civilian volunteers, are conducting damage assessments and providing assistance to affected communities. The Colombian government has declared a state of emergency in the affected regions.

News outlets across the region, including AFP reporters, captured footage of collapsed buildings and widespread destruction in cities such as Pereira and Manizales, tourist regions like Eje Cafetero, and the capital of Colombia, Quibdo. The initial reports indicate that the earthquake caused significant damage to infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and power lines. Several buildings were damaged or destroyed, highlighting the vulnerability of infrastructure in the region.

The earthquake follows a series of significant tremors that struck Venezuela in late June, resulting in a death toll exceeding 6,000 people and widespread destruction of buildings and infrastructure across the country. The earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude, were among the deadliest to hit the region in recent years, raising concerns about the region’s seismic risk.

Authorities in Colombia and Ecuador are coordinating relief efforts, providing emergency shelter and medical assistance to those affected. The international community has offered support and assistance, recognizing the devastating impact of the earthquake on the region.

The quake has also raised questions about the region’s seismic activity and potential risks. Experts are analyzing data to understand the earthquake’s characteristics and assess the risk of future seismic events. The long-term recovery process will require significant resources and collaboration from governments, international organizations, and local communities.

The earthquake serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of communities in seismic-prone regions and the importance of preparedness and disaster risk reduction strategies. The full extent of the damage and the long-term consequences remain to be determined, but the region is facing a complex humanitarian crisis.

The event underscores the importance of robust earthquake monitoring and early warning systems, particularly in regions with a history of seismic activity. The Colombian government has launched a national disaster response plan, emphasizing the need for rapid assessment and effective coordination.

The earthquake’s impact extends beyond the immediate loss of life and property; it has also disrupted vital services, strained infrastructure, and created significant economic challenges for the affected communities. The situation remains fluid, with ongoing efforts to provide assistance and support to those affected.
