Nigeria’s National Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 30-year-old Italian-based businessman at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu on Sunday, August 2nd, 2026, following the discovery of nearly 100 wraps of illicit substances before he boarded an international flight.
The suspect, identified as Joseph Cyril, was intercepted while attempting to board Ethiopian Airlines flight ET930, a flight scheduled to travel to Italy via Addis Ababa and France. He subsequently excreted 98 wraps of the substance with a total weight of 1.510 kg following his arrest.
The NDLEA stated that Cyril had flown into Nigeria from Italy on July 13th, 2026, at a hotel in Awka, Anambra State. According to the investigation, he agreed to carry the materials in exchange for a fee of €3,500, with the payment intended to fund his family’s relocation to Germany.
“Cyril’s presence at the hotel in Awka is being investigated as part of a larger operation,” stated a spokesperson for the NDLEA. “He ingested the illicit substances at a time when he was attempting to board the flight. It’s important to note that the substances remained in his system during his journey to Enugu before they were fully excreted at the airport.”
The NDLEA confirmed that the agency conducted additional operations at courier facilities in Lagos, seizing a series of additional seizures within days of the Enugu arrest. These included discovering 1.2 kg of illicit substances concealed inside 25 phone chargers, and another finding 500 grammes of the same substance hidden within a false bottom of a backpack destined for Saudi Arabia.
Furthermore, on Tuesday, August 4th, a consignment of 2.3 kg of ‘Loud’ was intercepted after arriving from the United States.
This coordinated effort by the NDLEA across both passenger and cargo channels represents a sustained enforcement push across Nigerian international gateways. The investigation is ongoing, and the NDLEA is continuing to analyze the data gathered from these seizures.
