A significant earthquake has struck Colombia’s Pacific coast, triggering widespread devastation and leaving a trail of injuries across the region. The quake, measuring a magnitude of 7.4, struck at 07:34 GMT on Monday, October 28th, 2023, at a depth of 96 kilometers (60 miles) beneath the Earth’s surface. The Colombian government has confirmed that the quake’s epicenter was located approximately 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) east of the village of San José del Palmar in the Chocó province, a region already grappling with the aftermath of two previous devastating earthquakes just under two months prior. The geological service of Colombia has stated that this event follows a period of seismic instability in the area, raising concerns about potential aftershocks and further risks.

Governor Chocó Carolina Córdoba has reported that individuals have been injured, but the precise number remains undisclosed. She emphasized the urgent need for continued monitoring and assessment of the situation, particularly regarding the possibility of aftershocks that could pose a continued threat to residents and infrastructure. The immediate response from local authorities is focused on providing aid to those affected and assessing the extent of the damage.

The quake’s impact has been felt hundreds of kilometers away in Bogotá, the capital city, where several buildings were evacuated as a precautionary measure. The Colombian newspaper El Tiempo has released video footage depicting a collapsed building in Manizales, a significant coffee region area, showcasing the scene of distress and a desperate evacuation effort. The footage reveals a scene of significant structural damage and a palpable sense of fear amongst residents.

The earthquake’s tremors were felt as far east as the capital, Bogotá, where residents were urged to remain indoors and to be prepared for potential ground movement. The magnitude 7.4 quake was the result of a complex geological event, a significant tremor that occurred beneath the Earth’s surface, and is attributed to the movement of tectonic plates in the region. The seismic activity has been a concern for seismologists in Colombia, highlighting the need for enhanced monitoring and early warning systems to mitigate the impact of future seismic events.

Prior to the current quake, Colombia had already experienced two major earthquakes in the region just over two months prior, resulting in a total of over 6,100 deaths across the country. These twin quakes, occurring in neighboring Venezuela, had a devastating impact on the nation’s infrastructure and economy. The initial reports indicate that the first quake, which struck on October 10th, had a significant impact on the Chocó province, causing widespread damage to homes and infrastructure. The second quake, occurring on October 24th, further exacerbated the situation, leading to numerous casualties and displacement of communities. The Colombian government has launched a full-scale relief effort, deploying emergency responders and providing essential supplies to affected areas. The immediate priority is to rescue survivors, provide medical assistance, and restore essential services such as water, electricity, and communication networks.

The state of the Pacific coast is currently being assessed, with officials acknowledging the potential for significant infrastructural damage. The risk of landslides and soil liquefaction is also being monitored, adding to the complexity of the situation. The Colombian government has activated its emergency response plan, coordinating with international aid organizations to provide support. The long-term recovery process will require substantial resources and a sustained commitment to rebuilding and resilience-building efforts. The earthquake’s effects are already being felt across the affected regions, and the country is bracing for the potential for further seismic activity in the coming days and weeks. The full extent of the damage and the number of casualties remain unclear, but authorities are emphasizing the importance of continued vigilance and preparedness.

Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available. The USGS has indicated that the earthquake was a ‘moderate’ magnitude event, but the impact has been significantly heightened by the depth of the epicenter.
