Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has officially announced the completion of crucial repairs to the 21-inch and 42-inch Kpong-Tema transmission pipelines following a meticulously planned maintenance exercise commencing on Thursday, August 6, 2026. This significant undertaking represents a vital step in bolstering Ghana’s water security. The company stated the work was completed on schedule, despite encountering several technical and operational hurdles throughout the process.
The repair program, which began at various points along the pipelines, is a direct response to persistent weaknesses detected during a recent inspection. Following the completion of the replacements, water production has resumed at the Kpong Treatment Plant, marking a critical milestone for the region. GWL emphasized that while the resumption of production does not immediately return to full normal supply, the transmission lines and reservoirs require time to fill and for operating pressure to stabilize.
“Barring unforeseen technical challenges, more consumers are expected to receive water as the system stabilises,” the company announced in a statement, stressing the importance of continued patient observation by the public. GWL’s Water Demand Management and Rationing Programme remains in place to ensure fair distribution of water among consumers, encouraging continued observation of scheduled rationing periods.
The Managing Director of Ghana Water Ltd, Adam Mutawakilu, who oversaw the entire project at various stages, lauded the engineering, contractor, maintenance team, and technical personnel for their dedication and expertise. He specifically highlighted the leadership of Ing. Dr Hadisu Kappus Alhassan and Ing. Michael Botse Baidoo, praising their collaborative efforts and commitment to project success. He also expressed appreciation to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Ing. Kwame Kpekpena, and the ECG technical team for their crucial support throughout the project, including the late-night work required to resolve critical electrical and operational issues and facilitate the timely resumption of water production at Kpong. Mr Mutawakilu further thanked the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), contractors, engineers, field personnel, support teams, and other stakeholders for their significant contributions to the exercise.
