Ghana’s Ministry of Local Government has revealed a concerning 59.3% occupancy rate of households with access to improved toilet facilities, a stark contrast to the nation’s broader progress in water and sanitation delivery. This figure, detailed in the Ministry’s annual report accompanying the 2026 African Day for Decentralisation and Local Development, underscores a persistent challenge, particularly in underserved communities where access to safe and dignified sanitation remains a significant hurdle. The Ministry’s statement represents a substantial disparity, representing a critical gap in the country’s sanitation landscape. The data, a crucial component of Ghana’s overall WASH situation, underscores that while 87.7% of the Ghanaian population has access to basic drinking water services, sanitation outcomes lag considerably. The Ministry attributes this to inequalities in access to improved household toilet facilities and complexities surrounding wastewater management and sustainable solid waste disposal. “Addressing these challenges requires stronger local institutions, enhanced community participation, and increased investments in sanitation infrastructure and services across the country,” stated a Ministry spokesperson. The Ministry emphasizes that Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) play a pivotal role in addressing this deficit due to their responsibility for planning and coordinating essential services at the local level. Specifically, the Ministry is actively working to strengthen MMDAs through improved institutional capacity, sustainable financing arrangements, and enhanced partnerships with key stakeholders. These partnerships include Regional Coordinating Councils, Ghana Water Limited, the Community Water and Sanitation Agency, civil society organisations, traditional authorities, and religious institutions. The Ministry highlights that traditional and religious leaders are crucial in mobilizing communities and promoting behavioral change related to sanitation and environmental protection. The 2026 African Day for Decentralisation and Local Development theme, ‘Empowered Local Governments for Sustainable Water and Sanitation: Advancing Resilient, Inclusive and Sustainable Cities and Territories towards Agenda 2063,’ underscores the importance of this initiative. BoG and SEC are also launching an Ashanti NaVALI initiative to drive responsible development and improvement.” ,
