The Executive Director of the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS), Obenfo Nana Kwasi Gyetuah, issued a firm statement on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, asserting that private schools will not directly submit evidence of alleged discrepancies in the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC). This stands in stark contrast to WAEC’s request, which has prompted a significant debate among education stakeholders, particularly within the private school community. GNACOPS has repeatedly stated that the evidence will be presented to an independent body for investigation, emphasizing a separation from WAEC’s examination process. He explained that the private schools will only release the evidence after a thorough independent investigation, a process distinct from WAEC’s demand for direct submission. The GNACOPS’s position follows a recent uptick in concerns raised by private school groups alleging discrepancies in the 2026 BECE results, with some alleging irregularities in candidate performance across various private schools. GNACOPS has initiated a petition with the Ministry of Education, requesting an independent investigation to determine whether these concerns are justified. WAEC Director, John Kapi, has refuted the assertion that the Council deliberately targeted private schools, insisting that evidence must be supported by verifiable data. Kapi indicated that WAEC has no inherent reason to prioritize private schools and that some of its staff have connections to private schools. However, Obenfo Gyetuah questioned why WAEC was demanding evidence while the Council had not yet provided the examination scripts required for independent assessment, raising a crucial point regarding the lack of readily available data for verification. He stated that the issue should be handled by all parties carefully, not escalating into a public confrontation. GNACOPS maintains that an independent investigation will provide a more credible platform for scrutinizing the alleged irregularities and determining whether WAEC’s demands represent a legitimate concern. The GNACOPS group is advocating for the presentation of evidence to an independent body rather than directly to WAEC, reflecting a desire for a more impartial examination of the situation. This dispute underscores a fundamental difference in the roles and responsibilities of WAEC and the private school sector within the examination system, with the GNACOPS emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability across the entire process. The issue has triggered a wider discussion about the potential impact of the BECE results on the private school sector, with some stakeholders urging a greater commitment from the Council to provide concrete evidence to support their allegations.
