The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is facing a critical juncture regarding the future of head coach Carlos Queiroz, despite mounting calls for his continued leadership of the national team. Queiroz was appointed in April 2023, replacing Otto Addo, tasked with leading Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico – a significant milestone for the nation’s footballing aspirations. His initial tenure saw Ghana achieve a remarkable feat, reaching the knockout stage of the tournament in the 2023 World Cup, marking the first appearance in the competition since the 2010 edition in South Africa. The Black Stars’ progress under Queiroz was undeniably impressive, culminating in a commendable performance in the Round of 32, though they ultimately fell short of the final. However, the sustained pressure from the football community and supporters has intensified, prompting a significant debate regarding Queiroz’s long-term involvement. President John Mahama has publicly expressed his support for Queiroz’s continued leadership, arguing that continuity is vital for Ghana to maintain competitive momentum in major international competitions, particularly the Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup. During a July visit to the Sports Stadium in Accra, Mahama asserted that ‘persuading the coach to continue working with the team’ could significantly bolster Ghana’s prospects for both tournaments,’ highlighting the strategic importance of maintaining a stable leadership structure. Despite these assurances, the GFA is currently engaged in complex negotiations with other coaches for the Black Stars’ position, with a palpable sense of uncertainty surrounding the future of Queiroz’s tenure. Following Ghana’s disappointing exit in the World Cup, Queiroz publicly suggested his time with the team was nearing its conclusion, clarifying that his social media post had been misinterpreted. However, the situation remains complicated by the GFA’s ongoing efforts to secure a replacement for the coach, with the association considering alternatives. Nana Oduro Sarfo, GFA Executive Council member, confirmed that the association is actively exploring options, stating that ‘the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is still in talks with other coaches for the Black Stars job.’ The departure of assistant coach Roger De Sa, who joined Queiroz’s technical team ahead of the World Cup, has further complicated the situation. De Sa’s transfer to Cape Town Spurs, a new role as technical director, means Queiroz would now need to adjust his backroom staff, adding to the challenges of a potential replacement. The GFA is now facing considerable pressure to resolve the coaching situation swiftly, as Ghana’s return to competitive action is approaching with the scheduled beginning of their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign in September. The Black Stars are set to participate in a challenging Group C alongside Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia, and Somalia, representing a significant step in their journey towards qualifying for the continent’s biggest football tournament. The GFA’s primary objective is to avoid protracted uncertainty surrounding the national team’s leadership and ensure the Black Stars have sufficient time to adequately prepare for the Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup, ultimately securing Ghana’s place among the continent’s top football nations.”}”””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””
