Ghana’s Black Queens suffered a devastating setback in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) quarter-finals, losing to Malawi 2-1 in a match that effectively ended their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The match, which began at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat, Morocco, saw Ghana’s starting lineup remain largely unchanged from their 1-1 draw against Mali in the final Group D fixture.

From the outset, the Black Queens struggled to establish dominance, with Malawi quickly taking the lead after just six minutes. Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah’s quick reaction, capitalizing on a rebound after a Malawi defender’s challenge, put Ghana in the lead.

However, Ghana responded emphatically, with Evelyn Badu connecting with Alice Kusi’s cross, narrowly missing the target.

Malawi then doubled their lead in the 38th minute, with Temwa Chawinga finding the back of the net after a deflection off Ghana midfielder Grace Asantewaa. The goal was ruled out for offside following a review of the build-up.

Doris Boaduwaa attempted to restore Ghana’s advantage in the 79th minute, but the goal was unsuccessful, the Black Queens maintaining a 1-1 scoreline.

The match showcased a tense and competitive battle, with Ghana’s defense holding firm throughout much of the encounter.

Despite a determined push from Ghana, the Black Queens were unable to create a scoring opportunity, ultimately conceding to Malawi in the 79th minute.

The defeat means Ghana’s path to the 2027 World Cup remains uncertain, dependent on the playoff results.

Malawi will face Algeria in the WAFCON semi-finals on Wednesday, August 12, at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat. Ghana will face Côte d’Ivoire in a playoff in Casablanca, with a place at the 2027 Women’s World Cup at stake.

Head coach Kim Lars Björkegren opted for the same starting lineup as in their 1-1 draw against Mali in the final Group D fixture. The Black Queens’ performance highlights the challenges of reaching the top stages of international competition.

Malawi’s performance was largely characterized by a relentless pressing and possession-based approach, creating numerous opportunities to exploit Ghana’s defensive vulnerabilities.

The team’s resilience was evident, particularly in their ability to weather the initial onslaught and maintain control of the game.

While Ghana initially threatened with a promising start, the Black Queens ultimately succumbed to Malawi’s determined resilience, proving to be a formidable opponent.

This result underscores the significant challenges faced by the Black Queens in their pursuit of a World Cup qualification.

Further analysis indicates that the team’s tactical adjustments and defensive positioning were insufficient to overcome Malawi’s persistent pressure.

Malawi’s tactical strategy, focusing on quick transitions and exploiting gaps in Ghana’s defense, proved to be a key factor in their victory.

The WAFCON quarter-final exit signifies a significant setback for Ghana’s ambitions for the 2027 World Cup, requiring strategic adjustments and a renewed focus on team cohesion.

The loss also casts a shadow on Ghana’s overall progress in women’s international football.

Overall, the Black Queens’ performance was a disappointment, leaving them with a considerable hurdle in their quest for a major trophy.

The team’s performance underscores the importance of strategic planning and tactical adaptability in achieving sustained success on the international stage.
