The Director-General of the Department of Urban Roads, James Oduro Amoo-Gottfried, has announced the completion of the local component of the Suame Interchange Phase Two project, slated to be fully operational by October 2026. He stated that the project’s completion will provide alternative routes for motorists and significantly reduce traffic congestion within the Suame area, a significant undertaking with a projected impact on the region’s transportation infrastructure. The project, which began in 2022, is progressing steadily, with significant advancements being made on both phases of the interchange. Phase One focuses on the main multi-tiered interchange, encompassing the overpass from the Suame Roundabout to Abrepo Junction, along with the widening of the Western Bypass road. Phase Two, covering approximately 15 kilometers of local roads within the project’s jurisdiction, represents a substantial portion of this work. According to Amoo-Gottfried, the second phase is almost complete, with the construction of three overpasses at Anomangye, New Road, and Ebusuakruwa, representing a key milestone in the project’s progression. He emphasized that the completion of Phase Two was strategically planned to coincide with the commencement of construction on the main interchange, ensuring a smooth transition for motorists. Specifically, the Director-General explained that the overpasses will enhance northbound traffic movement, providing alternative routes for motorists and improving overall road capacity within the area. Furthermore, he highlighted the planned widening of the road between the Suame Roundabout and Abrepo Junction to increase vehicular throughput and alleviate congestion. A grade-separated underpass is also planned at Abrepo Junction, a crucial intersection that will significantly improve traffic flow. The Director-General addressed concerns regarding traders and structures located within the project’s right-of-way, assuring that persons operating within the affected areas are being temporarily relocated by the municipal assembly, with the Assembly responsible for managing these arrangements. He stressed the importance of facilitating the relocation of these individuals to ensure the continued progress of the construction. The Director-General underscored the urgency of the project, stating that ‘We have engaged the Assembly, and the Assembly will deal with them. For some of them, the Assembly is the one that had the arrangement for them to be there temporarily. So the Assembly will deal with them to move out, so that we can do the work.
