United States President Donald Trump has again reinvigorated his push for a controversial ‘anti-weaponisation fund,’ a bipartisan initiative intended to reward his political allies with taxpayer dollars. The initiative, which began as a response to opposition to Todd Blanche’s appointment as Attorney General, now centers on a proposed allocation of funds to incentivize political advocacy. On Saturday, Trump took to Truth Social to criticize Senators John Cornyn and Thom Tillis for holding Blanche back, framing the fund as a key leverage point in his strategy.

The president’s latest statements risk further complicating the ongoing Blanche confirmation process, though the situation remains fluid. Blanche, who serves as Attorney General in an interim capacity, oversaw the initial creation of the fund as part of a settlement between Trump and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Trump initially sued the IRS, seeking $10 billion in damages, stemming from a 2019 lawsuit alleging he had unfairly targeted his political rivals, particularly former President Joe Biden. The IRS has since indicated that the settlement is dead, effectively eliminating the fund’s initial purpose.

Two Republican senators, John Cornyn and Thom Tillis, have blocked Blanche’s confirmation, citing concerns about the fund’s potential for resurrection. Tillis and Cornyn have argued that Trump has not provided sufficient guarantees to ensure the fund could not be revived, a point Trump has repeatedly emphasized, defending the fund as a ‘voice of reason’ for his political team.

Trump has actively defended the fund’s creation and its stated goals, asserting that it’s ‘dead, but you know, I wish it wasn’t’. On Saturday, he further outlined his strategy, stating that he would ‘push hard to get the Anti-Weaponization Bill’ passed. This includes a potential reapportionment of the fund, with Trump advocating for Blanche to continue serving as acting attorney general and bypassing the Senate confirmation process.

This proposal has garnered significant criticism, particularly from law enforcement officials, who fear the fund could be used to pay Trump supporters who participated in the January 6th Capitol riot. Republican leaders have also expressed significant political toxicity surrounding the fund, with many calling it a politically damaging move before the November midterm elections. Legislators last week canceled a planned vote by the Senate Judiciary Committee to advance Blanche for a full chamber confirmation, with all Republicans on the committee, including Cornyn and Tillis, agreeing to support her for him to advance. Tillis announced his retirement at the end of his term in January, following tense relations with Trump, and Cornyn lost his primary race to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, after Trump chose to endorse Paxton over the four-term incumbent. Blanche’s confirmation process has been characterized by questions regarding her loyalty to Trump and whether she would act autonomously as the top law enforcement official in the US.

Blanche has already sought to advance numerous Trump’s top priorities, including prosecuting his political rivals, including former FBI Director James Comey. A federal judge ruled last month that the settlement between Trump and the IRS, shielding Trump and his family from future tax investigations, was not legally valid. The judge further accused Blanche of double-dealing by working on behalf of both Trump and the federal agency Trump was challenging in the lawsuit, highlighting concerns about the fund’s potential for misuse.
