Colombia is grappling with a potential bomb attack on the newly elected President-elect, Abelardo de la Espriella, which occurred just days before his inauguration. The detonation, triggered in the city of Cucuta, bordering Venezuela, on Saturday, six days before de la Espriella is scheduled to replace outgoing President Gustavo Petro, has sparked widespread concern and intensified political tensions within the country. The incident was reported by George Quintero, the security secretary for the Norte de Santander department, who stated that eight police officers and three civilians were injured.

The attack was swiftly attributed to multiple rebel groups, including the National Liberation Army (ELN) and dissident factions of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), alongside the criminal organization Clan del Golfo, a notorious group specializing in drug trafficking. De la Espriella’s social media platform, X, condemned the attack, labeling it a ‘cowardly terrorist attack’ against the National Police.

In response, de la Espriella’s campaign has emphasized his commitment to cracking down on rebel groups and criminal organizations, a focus that has been overshadowed by a surge in political violence. Over the past six decades, Colombia has endured a protracted internal armed conflict, marked by clashes between left-wing rebel groups, right-wing paramilitaries, government forces, and criminal enterprises. The conflict, and Colombia’s status as the world’s leading producer of cocaine, has become a central theme in de la Espriella’s presidential race.

The election season has been marred by heightened political instability, with rebel groups accused of staging numerous attacks, including bombings and the use of drones laden with explosives. In 2025, right-wing presidential hopeful Miguel Uribe Turbay was shot in the head at an event in Bogotá, dying within a month of the incident. His mother, journalist Diana Turbay, was tragically killed as part of Colombia’s internal conflict in 1991, following her abduction by criminal forces.

De la Espriella, who is set to take office on August 7, has promised to intensify efforts to combat rebel groups and criminal organizations, particularly those involved in the drug trade. His right-wing campaign was largely funded by the administration of US President Donald Trump, who has clashed with outgoing President Petro over regional security issues. Trump has advocated for a militaristic approach to criminal activity in the Americas, framing drug traffickers as ‘narcoterrorists’ who threaten US national security.

The election of de la Espriella represents a significant ideological shift from Petro, who sought a peace-through-dialogue approach to resolve the conflict. Petro attempted to pivot away from the US-led ‘war on drugs’ approach, focusing his government’s enforcement efforts on intercepting major drug routes. He and Trump clashed over his decision to shift away from targeting impoverished, small-scale farmers who grow coca, as well as traditional Andean teas and medication. De la Espriella has pledged to further expand Colombia’s military alliance with the US. He has also echoed hardline strategies championed by Trump and other right-wing figures, including Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, who has pledged to build megaprisons and bomb suspected drug traffickers. De la Espriella has warned of an active assassination plot against him, initially seeking to be sworn in at a military garrison in the Cauca department. Petro did not authorize the plan, and he will instead be sworn in at the City Hall in Bogota, including 11,000 soldiers and police officers.

Further complicating the situation, the Colombian government has also emphasized de la Espriella’s right to peace and security.
