India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has issued a significant and controversial statement, offering forgiveness to students who hurled expletives at him during protests last month, characterized as ‘misled children’ who must be guided toward ‘the right path’ rather than subjected to prosecution. The situation has escalated dramatically following the emergence of the ‘Cockroach Janta Party,’ a social media-driven youth movement initially focused on educational reform via viral memes. The movement, initially spearheaded by the chief justice of the Supreme Court, quickly mobilized tens of thousands of supporters across India, sparking similar demonstrations in cities nationwide. The protests, which began in May after a crucial exam was voided due to leaked questions, ultimately ended after the Modi government agreed to all protesters’ demands, including the resignation of the education minister and a pledge not to pursue criminal charges against demonstrators. However, these assurances have been met with criticism from authorities in states ruled by Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who have filed cases against hundreds of protesters, including teenagers, on social media, labeling them ‘deliberately harassing’ the prime minister and his mother. The authorities have unleashed tear gas, pellet shotguns, and baton charges on students in New Delhi, intensifying tensions and sparking widespread condemnation. The situation has also drawn attention to the government’s response to student protests, with critics accusing Modi’s far-right Hindu nationalist policies of victimizing female protesters, including teenagers, through online harassment and intimidation. Specifically, supporters of Modi’s political ideology have targeted female protesters on social media, posting rape and death threats, demanding the local authorities take criminal action. Despite these assurances, the government has also introduced a bill in parliament to amend examination legislation, proposing longer prison terms and higher fines for those involved in exam paper leaks, a move that has been met with opposition from the opposition and a growing number of student activists. The movement has also prompted the Modi government to launch a campaign to combat online hate speech targeting students, stating that it has launched a bill to amend legislation governing public examinations to ‘longer prison terms and higher fines’ for those involved in exam paper leaks. The controversy has further intensified, with the opposition pressing the government to sack Home Minister Amit Shah, who controls law and order in Delhi, for the crackdown on students, and the media highlighting the government’s failure to address the issue of student safety and the government’s perceived lack of accountability for the violence. Tensions have also erupted in Hyderabad, where police registered a case against the head of Meta India, Arun Srinivas, over videos depicting Modi in an ‘abusive manner’ on the company’s Facebook platform, a significant escalation of the existing unrest. The Modi government has stated that platforms must remove unlawful content within three hours of being flagged by courts or government agencies. The situation is ongoing, with ongoing reports of clashes between protesters and security forces in several parts of the country, and the debate surrounding the government’s response to student protests continuing to dominate the Indian media landscape.” , ]}} 8.5
