Beninese senators are set to hold their first parliamentary session since their official installation. The work of the ordinary session is scheduled for Wednesday, October 28, 2026, which is one week after that of the National Assembly, planned for October 22 at the Palais des Gouverneurs in Porto-Novo. The information is reported by the public service daily La Nation.
The chosen schedule is based on Article 20 of the Senate’s Internal Rules. This provision stipulates in particular that the ordinary session of the upper house opens one week after that of the National Assembly when the latter begins in the second half of October. Officially installed last July 30, the members of the Senate will thus experience their first ordinary session. The ceremony is announced at the Sofitel dome in Cotonou, in the presence of several prominent figures. Notably, deputies and presidents of institutions of the Republic are expected. According to La Nation, the inaugural session is expected to follow a format similar to that of the National Assembly’s parliamentary openings. A single speech is planned, that of the President of the Senate, Patrice Talon. The president of the upper house is expected to outline the main themes of the session and review the files that will be submitted for the senators’ examination. The ordinary session is scheduled to last 21 days. Senators will examine the files referred to the Senate that have not yet been the subject of a decision, provided they remain relevant. Other subjects may be added to the agenda during the proceedings. The convening of the session is the responsibility of the President of the Senate. In the event of impediment or failure, it may be done by the vice-president or by a majority of the senators.
