Henry T. Wooster, the newly confirmed United States Ambassador to Kenya, has more than three decades of diplomatic and national security experience, as Kenyans.co.ke has established.
Wooster was nominated by President Donald Trump on June 1, 2026, and was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on September 30.
He succeeds former Ambassador Meg Whitman, who left the post in 2024.
According to documents reviewed by Kenyans.co.ke, the career diplomat has served in senior positions in Washington and at U.S. embassies across Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Caribbean.
Wooster also served as an officer in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1985 to 2009 and served as a Special Forces officer.
Before entering the Foreign Service, Wooster built a military career that later intersected with his diplomatic work.
He served as a foreign policy adviser to the commanding general of the U.S. Joint Special Operations Command.
Wooster has also held senior positions at the U.S. Department of State.
According to data from the U.S. Department of State, he served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs and previously as Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Maghreb and Egypt.
His diplomatic postings have included the U.S. embassies in Paris, Amman, Islamabad, Baghdad, Moscow, Port-au-Prince and Tbilisi.
He also worked at the U.S. Mission to NATO and the National Security Council.
Wooster served as U.S. Ambassador to Jordan from 2020 to 2023. Before becoming ambassador, he had served as deputy chief of mission and later chargé d'affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Amman.
His most recent overseas assignment was in Haiti, where he became chargé d'affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince on June 12, 2025.
Wooster took charge of the U.S. mission as Haiti faced a severe security crisis and an international-backed effort to support Haitian security forces.
Kenya was playing a central role in that effort, with Kenyan police officers deployed as part of the multinational security mission to quell the tensions.
Experts say the Nairobi posting will bring Wooster to another country where security cooperation is a major part of the relationship with Washington.
Wooster holds a bachelor's degree from Amherst College and a master's degree from Yale University.
He speaks French and Russian and has a working knowledge of Arabic, Persian, and Syriac/Aramaic.
