Government has presented an improved proposal to striking pre-tertiary teacher unions as it seeks to resolve the issues that triggered their industrial action.
Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu and Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson led government’s negotiations with the leadership of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG).
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Mr Iddrisu said government had tabled an improved plan aimed at addressing the concerns raised by the unions.
He appealed to the teachers to call off the strike and return to the classroom as negotiations continue.
However, the teacher unions say the meeting ended without a resolution to the impasse, and their strike remains in force.
GNAT General Secretary Thomas Musah said the government had presented new proposals which the union leadership needed to take back to its members for consideration.
He said the unions would meet and discuss the proposals before taking a decision on the way forward.
President of PRETAG, King Ali Awudu, also urged teachers to remain at home until the union leadership directs otherwise.
The three pre-tertiary teacher unions began the nationwide strike on Friday, September 25, 2026, after their concerns remained unresolved.
The unions had earlier given government until midday on September 24 to address their grievances, warning that they could no longer restrain their members from taking industrial action.
Their demands include the conclusion of negotiations on a new Collective Agreement, the placement of promoted teachers on their new salary grades and payment of related arrears.
They are also demanding the implementation of the 20 percent Deprived Area Allowance for teachers working in underserved communities.
