A major fire outbreak at Kofikrom in the North Kaneshie Industrial Area of Accra intensified on Thursday, October 1, 2026, with the flames spreading to the Duraplast factory.
The fire, which started in the early hours of Thursday, had been burning for several hours, destroying properties and sending thick smoke into surrounding communities.
Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) arrived at the scene and were battling to contain the blaze, but their efforts had been hampered by difficulties accessing the affected area.
According to eyewitnesses, there were no accessible roads leading directly to the scene, while some cargo trucks had also blocked the available routes.
Residents had watched helplessly as the fire spread, with some reportedly losing their property to the flames.
The eyewitness attributed the intensity of the fire partly to the large quantities of plastic materials being sold around the area, which he said had provided fuel for the blaze.
He added that strong winds had also helped spread the flames to other parts of the industrial area.
The fire had eventually spread into the Duraplast factory, raising concerns about further destruction of property and the possibility of the blaze spreading to other facilities within the industrial area.
Various security agencies had since taken control of the main fire scene as efforts continued to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread.
