Meta’s (META) popular Muse AI agent continues to gain steam, topping 5 million downloads as of Wednesday, according to market intelligence firm Sensor Tower.
The milestone comes less than a month after Meta launched the service on Sept. 8. It is currently only available in the US and Canada.
For comparison, OpenAI’s (OPAI.PVT) ChatGPT reached 5 million downloads in 56 days. It took SpaceX’s (SPCX) Grok and Anthropic’s (ANTH.PVT) Claude 103 days and 492 days, respectively, to hit the mark.
It’s worth noting that ChatGPT was the first mainstream generative AI chatbot, launched in November 2022, which could have contributed to its comparatively slow start.
Muse also remains the No. 1 app on both Apple’s App Store and the Google Play store. But that doesn’t make Muse the fastest app to surpass 5 million downloads in such a short period of time.
Sensor Tower notes that Disney+, HBO Max, Threads, “Candy Crush,” “Pokémon Go,” and “Fortnite” all had more than 5 million downloads within the same time frame.
What makes Muse’s move up the charts impressive is the fact that it is an AI agent designed with consumers in mind. So far, such platforms have largely been the domain of more tech-savvy users and developers, but Muse’s interface, which includes a customizable, anthropomorphic avatar and capabilities, makes it relatively straightforward and easy to use.
Meta is also pouring ad dollars into driving attention toward the app. Sensor Tower says the company has given the lion’s share of its in-house advertising, garnering 50% of “daily house impressions” in the two weeks between Sept. 14 and Sept. 27.
Muse was also among the “top 15 brands by advertising impression in the US” during that period.
The app is free to download and use, with Meta saying it will eventually take a small cut of sales made through the agent.
AI agents continue to gain traction among Silicon Valley’s tech giants. On Tuesday, OpenAI debuted its own AI agentic platform with a similarly customizable, cutesy avatar called Dots.
While Dots is aimed at the enterprise market for now, OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar told CNBC that the company will eventually release the platform to consumers, as well.
