The Turkish justice minister has arrested the head of the referees body, Ferhat Gundogdu, and five others as part of a police investigation into corruption within the sport. The investigation centers on alleged interference with referee classifications, scoring, and appointments. Police also conducted searches of homes, workplaces, and offices. Further, a 2025 investigation revealed hundreds of professional match officials had betting accounts, leading to 29 arrests, including 14 footballers. While the investigation did not specifically link the betting scandal to the current corruption case, the previous investigation did trigger this scrutiny.
