The government intends to build new landfills in the Greater Accra and Eastern regions to address rising waste volumes across the country. Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, announced this, noting the growing pressure on existing facilities. Kpone landfill, already at its capacity, is slated for decommissioning. The expansion will involve constructing new sites across both areas, alongside plans to move waste from Agbogbloshie to another site. The government will also consider alternative technologies like incineration and waste-to-energy. Ayeriga emphasized the need to find ways to manage waste beyond landfill disposal, exploring resources like energy conversion.
