Ablakwa, the Ghanaian government, has issued a statement addressing concerns raised by some Ghanaians regarding their evacuation from South Africa following renewed xenophobic attacks and violence. The government, led by Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has responded to the situation, stating that they will ‘forgive’ the individuals but will not waver in prioritizing the welfare of all Ghanaians facing danger abroad.

Following the evacuation of nearly 1,900 citizens, the government spent approximately GH¢49.72 million to bring them home, a figure reflecting the intense need to protect lives and security. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that the evacuation was initiated in response to a surge in xenophobic attacks and anti-foreigner violence, intensifying the pressure on the nation’s borders.

The Foreign Affairs Minister emphasized that the decision to bring them home was a strategic response to mitigate the dangers faced by those abroad. He acknowledged that some Ghanaians have expressed regret about being evacuated, but insisted that the government remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding Ghanaians.

In a town hall meeting with Ghanaians in the United States, Minister Ablakwa underscored the government’s stance: ‘I’ve heard comments and seen some media reports of one or two people who have said they have been evacuated back home and they are beginning to regret. If that is the thank you we get, no problem, we are not perturbed. We are going to continue to prioritize the welfare of Ghanaians.’

Reports from some returnees, including Kofi Baah, indicate that the financial assistance received during the evacuation has not been sufficient to support their families. The returnees expressed frustration, stating that the lack of financial support has exacerbated their hardship, particularly concerning their family’s well-being. The government’s response acknowledges the democratic space allowing for open expression, contrasting with the situation faced in South Africa, where individuals were facing significant challenges.

Furthermore, the government has announced a ban on preaching and hawking on moving vehicles, a move intended to further safeguard the nation’s security and prevent potential unrest. The Ministry of Justice clarified that the government will continue to prioritize the welfare of all Ghanaians, irrespective of their circumstances, and remains resolute in its commitment to maintaining peace and stability throughout the country. The situation is being monitored closely by both domestic and international authorities, with efforts focused on ensuring the safety and security of all citizens.

The total cost of the evacuation was approximately GH¢49.72 million, highlighting the significant investment made in protecting Ghanaian lives.

This situation underscores the complex interplay between national security and the well-being of its citizens, with the government emphasizing its dedication to ensuring the safety and prosperity of all Ghanaians, regardless of external challenges.”
