The legal battle between Drakeo the Ruler’s family and Live Nation Worldwide Inc. has reached a significant juncture, with a judge recently issuing a ruling that significantly limits Live Nation’s ability to withhold financial records related to the 2021 stabbing that killed his son. The ruling, made by Judge James I. Montgomery, effectively restricts Live Nation’s access to information concerning the festival’s backstage security and operations, a move that has sparked considerable controversy within the hip-hop community and beyond. The family’s protracted pursuit of justice against Live Nation stems from the tragic event that unfolded on December 18, 2021, at the Once Upon a Time in LA festival held at Exposition Park. According to reporting, Drakeo was attacked during a backstage altercation and suffered a fatal stab wound to the neck, dying the following day at the hospital. He was only 28, a rising West Coast talent known for his distinctive flow and poetic lyricism since dropping his first mixtape in 2015. His debut studio album, *I Am Mr. Mosely*, released in April 2017, garnered critical acclaim, with critics praising his uniquely expressive word choices and innovative approach to rap. The family’s legal action extends far beyond Live Nation, encompassing a protracted investigation into the incident that involved the death of fellow rapper YG, who is believed to have brandished a knife during the brawl. The family is suing C3 Presents, Bobby Dee Presents Inc., Jeff Shuman, and USC, alleging wrongful death, seeking accountability for the event’s security and operations. The investigation into Drakeo’s death is ongoing, with the former security guard claiming to have witnessed rapper YG brandish a knife during the altercation. The security guard stated he was fighting YG and another man when Drakeo was pulled into the chaos, and he saw YG produce a blade and slash it in his direction. YG has consistently denied any involvement in Drakeo’s death, yet the allegations have persisted as authorities continue their investigation. In July 2026, police executed a search warrant at a Burbank property connected to YG and briefly detained him for questioning as part of the ongoing murder investigation. The case has remained largely unsolved despite dozens of witnesses present at the festival that night. The civil trial against the promoters is currently scheduled for November 30, 2026. The ruling, while initially welcomed by some, has been met with considerable criticism from the hip-hop community and legal experts, who argue it undermines the principle of transparency and due process.”
