President John Mahama has unveiled a significant initiative designed to bolster healthcare access, particularly in geographically remote areas of Ghana, offering a 20% financial incentive to health workers accepting assignments to underserved communities. The announcement, made during a community engagement event in the Daffiama-Bussie-Issa District, underscores a strategic effort by the government to address the uneven distribution of healthcare professionals across the nation. The President emphasized the importance of health workers in providing crucial services to communities where access is limited, highlighting their vital role in improving public health outcomes.
He stated that the government is actively working to mitigate the current disparity in the number of healthcare professionals residing in deprived areas, aiming to attract more individuals to these regions through a targeted financial reward. This move is part of a broader strategy to modernize the healthcare system and ensure that essential medical services are readily available to all citizens, regardless of their location. The initiative includes procuring an additional 5,000 health care bags and 7,000 motorcycles and tricycles to support the Free Primary Healthcare (FPHC) program, a crucial initiative aimed at expanding access to healthcare for vulnerable populations. These resources will complement the existing equipment already distributed, strengthening the capacity of health workers to provide direct patient care within the FPHC framework.
The Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, elaborated on the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure in deprived districts, stating that ‘the addition of these vehicles and bags will significantly enhance the ability of health professionals to conduct outreach visits and provide essential medical services directly to communities.’ Specifically, the procured equipment includes essential medical devices such as delivery beds, cardiac machines, phototherapy machines, and healthcare bags, demonstrating a deliberate focus on strengthening the FPHC program’s operational capabilities. The Fian Health Centre has been outfitted with a substantial array of medical equipment, including the delivery beds, to facilitate the delivery of free primary healthcare services.
The HE President’s Resetting Tour of the Upper West Region, scheduled to commence, is intended to solidify this commitment to extending healthcare access to communities across the country. This region, characterized by significant rural populations and limited infrastructure, represents a key focus for the government’s efforts to improve the health and well-being of the citizenry.
