Assin South MP Rev. John Ntim Fordjour has issued a forceful demand for a full-scale investigation into a burgeoning surge in narcotics trafficking within Ghana, alleging a significant escalation of criminal activity by the current government. In a scathing post on X, the former Deputy Education Minister, highlighting mounting evidence of a ‘cocaine coast’ situation, claims the government’s failure to adequately address the issue has exacerbated the problem. Fordjour stated that Ghana has experienced a dramatic increase in drug seizures, particularly linked to shipments originating from the nation, culminating in a substantial increase in methamphetamine seized in Australia in April 2026, totaling approximately $208 million. He further detailed a recent seizure in France involving cocaine, allegedly concealed in a shipment from Ghana, which he asserts constitutes a critical escalation. Mr. Fordjour points to a pattern of increasing drug traffic, noting that over $1 billion worth of narcotics has been intercepted in Ghana or connected to shipments from the country since the NDC administration began in 2025. He vehemently questions whether state institutions are effectively preventing illicit drug transit and, more significantly, whether they are profiting from the trade. Specifically, he demanded that ministries including the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Transport, Narcotics Control Commission, Ghana Immigration Service, and the BNI be held accountable for their roles in combating drug trafficking. He stated that within a mere two years of the NDC administration under President Mahama, over $1 billion worth of narcotics had been intercepted in Ghana or linked to shipments from the country. Fordjour warned that the situation threatens Ghana’s international image, potentially leading to further reputational damage if action is delayed. The MP expressed grave concern about the government’s lack of decisive action to protect the country’s reputation and prevent Ghana from becoming a ‘cocaine coast.’ The latest seizure in France, involving 3.9 tonnes of cocaine, worth €225 million, was reported in Wa, with two individuals arrested over suspected drug activity. This latest incident underscores the seriousness of the situation and reinforces Fordjour’s call for immediate and comprehensive investigations to uncover the true extent of the problem.
