The Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Professor Christian Agyare, has spearheaded a crucial strategic shift within the nation’s healthcare landscape, advocating for a fundamental transformation of the diploma curriculum to prioritize Bachelor of Science (BSc) programs in specialized health training. This bold initiative represents a deliberate response to escalating demands for highly skilled healthcare professionals, driven by evolving complexities in healthcare delivery and a growing need for specialized expertise across the country.

Professor Agyare emphasized that the current system, while providing foundational education, is insufficient to adequately address the burgeoning challenges facing the healthcare sector. The increasing complexity of medical practices, coupled with a heightened focus on specialized care – encompassing areas such as geriatric medicine, emergency response, and forensic pathology – necessitates a reimagining of how the nation’s health workforce is cultivated. He stated, ‘This presents an important opportunity and an urgent responsibility for us to rethink how we prepare our health workforce for the future.’

This call for change was articulated during the 13th Graduation Ceremony of Affiliate Ministry of Health Training Institutions in Kumasi, where over 24,000 graduates from 76 affiliate colleges across Ghana were conferred honors. The ceremony underscored the institution’s established reputation in Health and Allied Sciences, positioning KNUST as a key partner in supporting the Ministry’s initiatives to develop and deliver these crucial BSc programs. Professor Agyare explained that KNUST is strategically positioned to collaborate with the Ministry, facilitating the creation of these new educational pathways.

He stressed that a transition from diploma-level training to BSc education in specialized fields is not merely a change in curriculum; it’s a fundamental shift in focus. The move will enhance professional competency within the health sector and bolster the capacity of the nation to effectively respond to emerging health crises and complex challenges. Specifically, he highlighted the potential for increased patient safety and improved quality of care through a more skilled and adaptable healthcare workforce. The Ministry of Health Training Institutions Steering Committee, co-chaired by Chief Director Mr. Desmond Boateng and Dean of KNUST’s School of Nursing and Midwifery, Professor Veronica Dzomeku, has been working diligently to guide this transition. The Committee’s mission is to provide strategic leadership and oversight, ensuring the partnership between KNUST and the Ministry remains robust. The Ministry’s commitment to providing adequate resources for the training of these professionals is underscored by its reconstitution in March 2026, establishing a dedicated steering committee to oversee the collaborative effort.

Prof. Agyare acknowledged the challenges inherent in such a significant shift, acknowledging the need for a clearly defined framework and implementation roadmap. He underscored the importance of maintaining a balance between supporting the existing diploma program and investing in the development of new, specialized BSc degrees. He reiterated the crucial roles KNUST and its affiliate institutions must play – providing staff development, quality assurance, curriculum refinement, and academic collaboration – to continuously improve the quality of health professional education throughout the country. He further emphasized that the graduates should embrace professionalism, integrity, compassion and a strong sense of responsibility, reminding them that healthcare is fundamentally about service to humanity. ‘Where resources are limited, professionalism must not be limited; where circumstances are difficult, compassion must not be difficult; and where hope appears to be fading, you must become a source of hope,’ he concluded. KNUST’s School of Health Sciences considers slashing admissions over infrastructure deficit.

Further, the institution has disclosed that the Ministry of Health/KNUST is investigating a shift in tidal impacts to other Keta communities.
