French customs officials have successfully seized an estimated 3.9 metric tons of cocaine, valued at €225 million, from a shipment arriving at the northern port of Dunkirk on Thursday. This significant seizure, the first of its kind in France, represents a substantial blow to the criminal network allegedly involved in the illicit trafficking of narcotics within the European continent. The operation, which occurred during a routine inspection of cargo arriving from Ghana, underscores a persistent and escalating challenge for French law enforcement officials.

The cocaine, initially intended for distribution throughout Europe, was concealed within a container of plastic waste, a deliberate concealment tactic employed by the smugglers. The shipment, which began its journey from Ghana, was initially routed towards Antwerp, a major European distribution hub, but has since been systematically destroyed by French authorities. This underscores a strategic maneuver designed to minimize the risk of detection.

The French organized crime prosecutor’s office has opened a full-scale investigation into the shipment, classifying it as a serious criminal undertaking. The investigation focuses on the organized importation of narcotics and the alleged participation of individuals within a criminal association – a core element of the illicit activity.

The seizure of 108.81 tonnes of narcotics across France in 2025, covering a wide range of drug types, highlights the breadth of the network involved. This figure represents a significant portion of France’s overall narcotics total, with an estimated value of €2.197 billion. The authorities are keen to identify and prosecute those responsible for orchestrating such a large-scale operation.

Following the seizure, two individuals were apprehended at a bus station in Wa, Ghana, linked to the alleged smuggling operation. One individual, an ex-convict, was arrested in connection with a suspected attempt to smuggle cocaine through a herbal tea pack, along with phone chargers. This incident underscores the ongoing risk of cross-border smuggling and the challenges of combating transnational criminal activity.

The investigation is being led by specialized units within the French police force, and the French judiciary has opened a criminal investigation. French authorities are actively working with international partners to track the movement of the cocaine and identify the individuals involved in the network. The seizure represents a significant step in the ongoing efforts to disrupt the drug trade and combat the associated crimes.

The sheer scale of the operation – the 3.9 metric tons of cocaine – coupled with the significant value – €225 million – signals a substantial and persistent threat to the European drug market. Further investigation is expected to reveal the full extent of the network’s operations and the individuals involved in this complex criminal enterprise. The authorities are prioritizing the dismantling of the network, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in addressing this growing problem.

This incident highlights the vulnerability of cargo containers to concealment, a tactic often employed by criminal organizations. The fact that the cocaine was concealed within plastic waste suggests a deliberate attempt to obscure its origin and movement, adding another layer of complexity to the investigation. French law enforcement agencies are utilizing advanced forensic techniques to trace the origins of the shipment and identify the individuals involved. The focus remains on disrupting the supply chain and preventing further illegal drug trafficking.
