The Ghana Ministry of Transport has issued a stark warning, revealing an alarming daily average of eight road fatalities across the nation in 2025. This figure represents a significant and deeply concerning trend, prompting a national discussion about the escalating crisis in road safety – a situation the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has described as a ‘national crisis’. The Minister underscored the profound economic and emotional toll this crisis is inflicting on families and communities across the country.

Specifically, the Minister stated that Ghana has witnessed an average of 2949 deaths annually in 2025, representing a staggering loss of nearly 8 lives per day. This number dwarfs previous figures and underscores the urgency of addressing the underlying causes contributing to this persistent problem. The figures reflect a substantial increase compared to 2024, with a total of 2949 deaths recorded across 14,743 reported crashes.

These crashes, according to the Transport Minister, represent a significant portion of the overall road traffic burden. The 2026 Road Traffic Regulations, which came into effect on January 1, 2026, and the amendments to the existing Road Traffic (Amendment) Act of 2025, have been cited as key factors contributing to the problem. The Minister emphasized the critical need for stringent compliance with these new regulations, stating that ‘road traffic crashes have caused unacceptable loss of lives, injuries, and immense economic distress for countless families.’

He stressed the need for a fundamental re-evaluation of existing regulatory frameworks, highlighting the need for a proactive approach to preventing future tragedies. The Minister attributed the rise in road fatalities to a confluence of factors, including rapid urbanization, the increasing prevalence of advanced vehicle technology, and evolving road-user behaviors. These changes, he explained, are putting existing safety standards to the test.

Furthermore, the Minister pointed to the long-term impact of over 36,000 lives lost since 1991, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive strategy to prioritize road safety. The Minister reiterated that the Transport Ministry is committed to working with stakeholders across the country to implement effective measures to reduce accidents and fatalities. The Minister has stated that the Ministry is initiating a thorough review of current traffic management practices, incorporating technological advancements and enhanced enforcement strategies.

The Road Traffic (Amendment) Act of 2025, which came into effect on January 1, 2026, introduces several key changes designed to enhance road safety. These include stricter penalties for reckless driving, increased focus on driver training, and enhanced vehicle inspection procedures. The Minister further stated that the regulations are intended to shift the focus from simply reacting to accidents to proactively preventing them. The Ministry is actively collaborating with local authorities and the public to establish a culture of road safety and ensure that all road users are prioritizing safety.

The Minister concluded by urging the public to remain vigilant and to adhere to traffic laws, stressing that collective responsibility is paramount to mitigating the ongoing crisis. The government is actively pursuing several initiatives to promote road safety, including increased traffic monitoring and public awareness campaigns.”

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the gravity of the situation and underscores the urgent need for sustained investment in road safety initiatives throughout Ghana. The government’s commitment to implementing these regulations is crucial to safeguarding the lives of its citizens and ensuring the continued prosperity of the nation.
