Ghana’s government has unveiled a significant investment in the country’s sporting landscape, allocating $10 billion in the 2026 budget for the construction of ten new multi-sport stadiums across the nation. The initiative, spearheaded by President John Dramani Mahama, represents a crucial shift in priorities for the nation’s infrastructure development, particularly in regions lacking adequate sporting facilities. The president underscored the urgency of this project during a courtesy call to Ghanaian champions Medeama SC, Nations FC, and Ampem Darkoa Ladies at the Jubilee House, following a Sports Minister’s earlier announcement of revised infrastructure plans. Mahama stated that the project’s primary objective is to alleviate the shortage of modern sporting venues, with a particular emphasis on underserved regions where existing facilities are insufficient to meet the growing demand. The government has already committed substantial financial resources, specifically within the 2026 budget, to initiate the construction of these ten new stadiums,” the report noted. He added that the initial allocation includes significant financial backing for the project. Mahama further emphasized that the Ho Sports Stadium, a significant existing facility, requires substantial reconstruction rather than simple repairs, highlighting the scale of the undertaking. “The Ho Sports Stadium has deteriorated so much that it will require almost complete rebuilding to meet the stringent standards of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Gabon,” the president explained. The government has also announced ongoing renovations at several existing stadiums, including the Takoradi Stadium and the Baba Yara and Cape Coast stadiums, with plans to complete these improvements by the end of 2026. Furthermore, the National Sports Authority has suspended domestic football at the Accra Sports Stadium as upgrades continue to align with CAF’s standards in preparation for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. The project is expected to have a significant impact on Ghana’s sporting development, bolstering national teams and creating opportunities for growth within the country’s sporting sector. The investment underscores a government’s commitment to strengthening Ghana’s sporting infrastructure and enhancing the nation’s overall competitiveness on the international stage. The 2026 budget allocation for stadiums is a substantial investment, representing a key component of the government’s broader strategy to modernize and expand Ghana’s sporting capabilities. The initiative is a direct response to the growing demand for improved facilities, addressing critical needs across the country. The Ministry of Sports has stated that the project will be carried out with a focus on creating diverse sporting facilities suitable for a range of disciplines, including football, athletics, basketball, and volleyball, alongside established sports.” , ]}” ,
