Derek McInnes, the 55-year-old manager of Rangers, has acknowledged the challenges facing the club following a somewhat subdued start to the season, yet maintains a firm belief in the team’s potential for sustained success. Speaking to Sky Sports, McInnes expressed a sentiment of cautious optimism, acknowledging that ‘the moment is not yet here’ where the Rangers team will fully realize its potential, particularly in the face of recent setbacks. The team’s recent performances have been marked by a string of exits, notably the defeat against Jablonec in the Conference League play-off, and a dip in domestic results, with Rangers currently sitting at just one point in the League Cup and facing a difficult match against Aberdeen this Sunday. McInnes highlighted the immediate concerns regarding the team’s consistency and tactical approach. ‘I like to think I know what I’m doing as a manager,’ he stated, ‘I’m a good manager, I back myself but at the minute, none of us are doing our job well enough.’ The manager emphasized the need for a period of adjustment and a renewed focus on team cohesion. He revealed that Rangers are currently evaluating a range of recruitment options, with a stated intention to sign ‘a couple more’ players before the transfer window closes, a move he anticipates will involve ‘one or two’ departures before the end of the current window. The club’s recent consequences of European failure are also a key factor in McInnes’s perspective. ‘We’ve obviously missed big Youssef [Chermiti], the type of striker to go and stretch teams,’ McInnes said. He further elaborated on the need for a more proactive and defensively-oriented approach, suggesting that the team’s current possession-based style is not sufficient to consistently challenge opponents. ‘My teams have always had some sort of identity,’ he explained, ‘I want us to try and be a team that puts more stress on teams defensively and I don’t think that we are at the minute.’ The club has already secured twelve players, and McInnes hopes to bolster the squad with a ‘couple more’ additions, although he is keen to see the team ‘relax a wee bit more’ in possession and to be more comfortable with their tactical approach. He stressed that ‘it’s not as if we’re not capable of being that’ – implying that the team possesses significant talent – and that the club’s long-term success hinges on a sustained period of improvement. Regarding the recent exit of Chermiti, McInnes acknowledged the impact of the injury and suggested that the team needs to be more resilient in the face of adversity. The manager alluded to a need for a more focused and disciplined approach, highlighting the importance of maintaining a consistent level of performance and avoiding complacency. The situation at Rangers is undoubtedly fluid, with McInnes emphasizing the importance of a sustained period of progress before the club can truly assess its prospects. The manager’s comments reflect a cautious optimism, acknowledging the challenges ahead while maintaining faith in the team’s potential for a successful campaign, particularly in the face of ongoing uncertainty surrounding the club’s future. The statement underscores the importance of a cohesive and adaptable team dynamic. The long-term goals of the club are clear, and McInnes’s message suggests that the team is committed to pursuing those goals with determination and a strategic focus.
