The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has achieved a landmark reduction in maternal deaths, a development hailed as a significant turning point in efforts to safeguard the lives of pregnant women within the Ashanti Region and across Ghana. For the first time in a decade, the hospital has recorded a substantial drop in institutional maternal deaths, with the hospital’s management confirming a reduction of 23 deaths between January and June 2026 compared to the same period last year. This represents a remarkable shift, ending a period of rising or stagnant figures that had plagued the facility for nearly ten years.

Between January and June 2026, KATH reported a total of 55 institutional maternal deaths, a stark contrast to the 78 recorded in the same period last year. This represents a 23-death reduction, representing a significant improvement in the hospital’s performance and reflecting a dedicated focus on maternal health. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo addressed the hospital’s opening of the 2026 Mid-Year Performance Review Conference in Kumasi, announcing the figures and highlighting the hospital’s renewed commitment to protecting vulnerable women.

Dr. Baidoo emphasized that the improvement is largely attributable to the establishment of a new Maternal Intensive Care Unit (MICSU) – a crucial addition designed to accommodate eight beds, though only four are currently operational. He stated that the full activation of the MICSU is projected to further contribute to reducing deaths. ‘We recorded a welcome reduction in institutional maternal deaths from 78 at mid-year 2025 to 55 in the corresponding period in 2026,’ he explained. ‘This is a testament to the hospital’s proactive measures and our unwavering dedication to providing comprehensive maternal care.’

Beyond maternal mortality, KATH has recently completed an Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) Centre, anticipated to begin operations this month. Dr. Baidoo underscored that this expansion represents a crucial step in broadening access to specialized fertility care within Ghana, solidifying KATH’s position as the first public health facility to offer this comprehensive service. The facility will serve as a vital resource for individuals seeking fertility treatments and reproductive health services.

The reduction in maternal deaths at KATH isn’t solely a result of a new unit; it’s a broader strategic initiative driven by the hospital’s leadership, reflecting a commitment to improving the overall quality of maternal healthcare across the region. The data shows a clear trend of improvement, signaling a positive shift in the landscape of maternal health care in Ashanti and Ghana as a whole. Further analysis suggests that the MICSU’s capacity and integration with other specialized services are key contributors to this trend, indicating a focused approach to optimizing patient care.

This development underscores the importance of investing in robust maternal healthcare infrastructure and demonstrates KATH’s commitment to transforming the lives of pregnant women in the Ashanti Region and beyond. The hospital’s efforts are expected to have a profound impact on reducing maternal mortality rates and promoting a healthier future for women in Ghana.
