The newly commissioned Northshore Apparel Ghana factory, situated in Savelugu, Northern Region, has officially begun operations, announcing a remarkable 3,000 immediate job creation and an ambitious target of 10,000 positions when fully operational. This significant investment represents a landmark moment for industrial development in Northern Ghana, spearheaded by the Ghana Export-Import Bank (GEXIM). On Friday, August 28th, Chief Executive Officer Sylvester Adinam Mensah formally unveiled the facility’s commencement, highlighting its potential to profoundly impact the nation’s economic landscape.
The GEXIM is solely funding the project, solidifying its role as the sole source of financial support for this substantial undertaking. According to Mr. Mensah, the factory’s immediate impact alone generates 3,000 jobs upon commissioning, with projections indicating an increase to 10,000 direct employment roles within the subsequent years. He emphasized that this represents a transformative phase in industrial investment, demonstrating the factory’s capacity to stimulate economic growth and create opportunities across numerous sectors.
The Northshore Apparel facility boasts a sprawling 50 sewing lines, a 4,000-square-meter cutting and design center, and 8,000 square meters of warehousing space specifically designed for raw materials and finished products. Complementing this production capability is a 500-kilowatt peak solar power system, an on-site clinic and crèche, disability-friendly washrooms, a biodigester for waste management, and a 600,000-liter underground mechanised water facility.
Beyond its immediate production floor, the factory is anticipated to stimulate a cascade of business opportunities throughout the region. The project will create direct employment opportunities on the production floor and generate further revenue streams through transportation, food services, accommodation, maintenance, packaging, and logistics activities. Mr. Mensah explained that wages earned by workers will directly support households, facilitate children’s education, improve access to healthcare, and strengthen local businesses, thereby contributing to Ghana’s economic prosperity.
The factory’s success is being lauded as a strategic investment by GEXIM, reflecting its commitment to supporting Ghanaian enterprises capable of expanding productive capacity, enhancing value addition, and enhancing competitiveness within the international market. The facility’s employment impact will extend to an array of supporting businesses and activities, reinforcing the local economy’s vitality. The investment represents a significant step toward creating a sustainable and diversified industrial sector within Northern Ghana, demonstrating the potential for job creation and economic advancement in this region, and it’s a demonstrable commitment to Ghana’s economic future.”
The factory’s workforce will comprise over 2,000 prospective operators, who will receive comprehensive market-ready skills training. This initiative will ensure a consistent supply of skilled labor, contributing to the factory’s sustained growth and success. The factory’s success underscores the importance of strategic investment in infrastructure and human capital for sustained economic development, supporting Ghana’s aspirations for a brighter future.”
This project is a vital part of Ghana’s national development strategy, demonstrating the government’s dedication to bolstering local industry and creating a pathway to broader economic prosperity. The factory’s operations are expected to have a significant, positive impact on the local economy and the lives of the people of Northern Ghana.
