Ghanaian students studying on government scholarships at the University of Memphis in the United States are expressing urgent concerns regarding unpaid tuition and accommodation fees, demanding immediate resolution to prevent further sanctions and potential repercussions for their studies. The students, speaking anonymously, highlight a persistent issue spanning several months, with the university repeatedly requesting payment and issuing warnings of consequences if the outstanding balances are not met. The situation has been exacerbated by the students’ engagement with the Scholarship Secretariat and other officials, yet these efforts have yielded no tangible progress. Adom FMs morning show, Dwaso Nsem, featured a conversation with one of the beneficiaries, who stated that since the university issued warnings, students had been actively seeking assistance, but the situation has remained unresolved. The student recounts a similar experience earlier in the year, which was resolved after intervention from authorities. Since May, the students have been seeking help after the university issued notices demanding immediate payment, with the beneficiary emphasizing the urgency of the situation. The financial crisis could have serious consequences for students at various stages of their programs, with some nearing completion, while others still have a considerable timeframe remaining. For instance, a significant portion of the students are nearing the end of their studies, while others have approximately two years remaining on their programs. The student further pointed out that some beneficiaries are close to finishing their studies, while others still have more time on their programs. “We don’t know what has caused this problem,” he said. The student expressed uncertainty about the root cause of the current difficulty. The financial crisis could have serious consequences for students at different stages of their studies, and the student also cautioned that failure to resolve the matter could lead to students being sent back to Ghana, a prospect he fears could damage Ghana’s reputation. “If they don’t do anything about it, they may bring us back home, and it will be a bad name for us,” he said. The student added that such an outcome could also affect other Ghanaian students who plan to pursue their education in the United States. The student appealed directly to President John Dramani Mahama and the relevant government officials, including the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to act urgently. “We urge the President and Ablakwa to do something for us, otherwise we will have a big problem,” he said. The appeal comes after the University of Memphis issued notices demanding payment of outstanding fees. UG extends admissions for selected Information and Communication Studies programs.
