Minister of State in charge of Special Initiatives, Dr Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo, has announced a remarkable success in his tenure as Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, with the government’s efforts successfully preventing approximately 90% of planned industrial actions by organised labour. The initiative stemmed from initial reports of 17 potential strike actions by various worker groups when he assumed office in 2023.
Dr. Pelpuo emphasized that the Labour Ministry has consistently prioritized dialogue and negotiations with affected workers to address their concerns and avoid disruptions to essential services. He explained that the Ministry’s strategy involved actively engaging labour leaders, meticulously listening to their perspectives, and fostering a cooperative environment. “We had meetings with them, we listened to them, we cooperated. We got to a point where almost 90% of them gave up their strike actions,” he asserted, highlighting a pivotal moment in the preventative efforts.
