Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has announced a significant milestone in the national team’s coaching landscape: a near-complete appointment of a new head coach. Following a period of uncertainty since the departure of Carlos Queiroz, the GFA has finalized the selection process, with only final paperwork remaining before an official announcement is made. The senior national team has been without a substantive coach since Queiroz’s contract concluded in 2026 following the FIFA World Cup, a period marked by a lack of consistent leadership.
The experienced Portuguese tactician, initially appointed on a four-month deal, was replacing Otto Addo ahead of the tournament in North America, where Ghana achieved a historic knockout stage appearance for the first time since 2010.
With the Black Stars scheduled to regroup for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, Okraku stated that the federation is ‘close to confirming’ the new coach’s appointment. He emphasized that the coach is currently working diligently and has indicated that the team will have a ‘99% in place’ – meaning the coach is almost fully established – and that the new coach is already actively engaged.
He declined to reveal the coach’s identity, stating that the decision was ‘just finalizing procedures,’ suggesting potential discussions regarding Queiroz’s continued involvement or the possibility of a new candidate being selected. The new coach will be tasked with building on Ghana’s recent World Cup success and guiding the four-time African champions back to continental glory. Ghana will begin their qualifying campaign away to Ivory Coast in Group C, with the match scheduled for September 24th, 2026, at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké, kicking off at 19:00 GMT. The Black Stars will also face Somalia and The Gambia in their upcoming matches to secure qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations tournament, which will be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda in 2027.
Further details regarding the new coach’s background and tactical approach are expected to be released in the coming weeks as the process moves forward.
