Nigeria’s Football Federation (NFF) president, Ibrahim Gusau, has formally resigned from his position, marking a significant shift in leadership amidst mounting criticism directed at the nation’s football administration. The announcement, made at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, follows a period of intense scrutiny and growing discontent within the football community and beyond. Gusau, who assumed the presidency in September 2022, cited a desire to relinquish his duties and allow for broader participation in the development of Nigerian football, a move that has ignited considerable debate within the sector.

The resignation is directly linked to the NFF’s handling of a substantial £8.5 million Federal Government intervention fund, approved in 2024, intended to bolster the finances of the national teams. This fund, representing a significant allocation of public funds, was earmarked for compensating members of Nigeria’s national teams, including the men’s and women’s senior teams. However, the disbursement of these funds has been met with considerable criticism, raising concerns about transparency and accountability within the NFF structure.

The NFF’s handling of the funds has been a primary focal point of the criticism. The money, intended to settle outstanding wages and bonuses for players and staff, has fallen short of expectations, leading to accusations of mismanagement and a lack of proper oversight. The failure to fully compensate the players has fueled public anger and a sense of frustration within the football ecosystem, impacting team morale and national pride.

Gusau’s departure comes at a critical juncture, coinciding with the impending elections scheduled for September 27th in Lafia, Nasarawa State. His resignation follows a difficult period for Nigerian football, particularly concerning the performance of the Super Eagles men’s national team, who failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a significant disappointment for the nation. Similarly, the Super Falcons’ record of appearing at every Women’s World Cup since the tournament began in 1991 has been abruptly halted, adding to the sense of uncertainty and loss for the nation’s football fans.

The Super Eagles’ disappointing performance has been a recurring theme in recent years, with the team struggling to consistently qualify for major international tournaments. Gusau, in his statement, emphasized his commitment to giving other Nigerians the opportunity to contribute to the advancement of football in the country, a sentiment widely echoed by football stakeholders. He also defended his record, asserting that despite the national teams’ failures to qualify for the 2026 World Cups, he was leaving the federation in a stronger position than when he took over, highlighting a strategic shift in leadership aimed at revitalizing the national team’s prospects.

The NFF has yet to formally announce arrangements for an interim leadership following Gusau’s resignation, raising questions about the stability of the governing body and the future direction of Nigerian football. The situation highlights a complex interplay of financial challenges, performance disappointments, and a growing desire for greater accountability within the national football structure. The long-term implications of Gusau’s departure remain to be seen, but it undoubtedly signals a significant turning point for the nation’s football landscape. The controversy surrounding the £8.5 million fund is likely to continue to dominate discussions and investigations within the football community, demanding a thorough examination of the NFF’s financial management practices. The future of Nigerian football is now uncertain, dependent on the NFF’s ability to address the underlying issues and rebuild trust with stakeholders.
