The Nkwanta South Municipal Assembly in the Oti Region has decisively reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to substantially improving the living conditions of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) through a multifaceted program of essential item distribution and financial support. This significant intervention, formally presented at a brief event in Nkwanta, saw beneficiaries receive start-up kits and cash designed to bolster livelihoods and mitigate vulnerability within the community. The initiative represents a vital component of the government’s broader social intervention efforts, aimed at alleviating vulnerable populations and fostering inclusive development. The support was wholly financed through the statutory allocation currently required by assemblies to dedicate five percent of their District Assembly Common Fund to PWD-related initiatives.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Joseph Awal Antwi, underscored the significance of this endeavor, stating that it forms a critical component of governmental efforts to provide crucial relief and promote inclusive development. According to the MCE, the provision was meticulously financed through the district assembly’s allocation, specifically earmarked for PWD-related programs. He elaborated that a comprehensive needs assessment was conducted to ensure that the provided items directly addressed the specific circumstances and aspirations of beneficiaries. The program encompassed the distribution of a total of sixty (60) beneficiaries, each receiving a crucial assortment of essential items. These included chest refrigerators, cassava grinding machines, fufu pounding machines, and cash, alongside other tools intended to facilitate income-generating activities. The MCE emphatically urged recipients and their families to make diligent use of the provided resources, stressing a strong prohibition against their illicit sale or misuse.
Furthermore, the Social Welfare Department has been tasked with a rigorous monitoring exercise to ensure that the items are, indeed, being utilized for their intended purpose. The MCE cautioned strongly against any individual or group attempting to exploit the support for personal gain, stating that any beneficiary found to have sold or misused the assistance would face immediate legal repercussions. The MCK also expressed gratitude to President John Mahama for prioritizing social programs that center the vulnerable, particularly in Nkwanta South. He appealed to non-governmental organizations, philanthropists, and corporate entities to extend significant support to PWDs, particularly in the region, to tackle extreme poverty. In a separate comment to Adom News, the Nkwanta South Federation Chairman, Boanya Evans and other beneficiaries expressed profound gratitude to the government and the municipal assembly for the sustained assistance to PWDs, highlighting the positive impact of the items received on their lives and overall well-being.
The MCE also addressed the recent controversy surrounding the Asante Berko conviction, outlining five individuals of interest and emphasizing the ongoing investigation. The MCE announced ‘rebirth’ amidst calls for its abolition, signaling a renewed focus on its role in the justice system, and the need for its continued reevaluation and potential reconsideration. These developments underscore the government’s ongoing commitment to supporting PWDs within the Nkwanta South community and region, reflecting a strategic effort to ensure equitable opportunities and improved quality of life for all members of the community.
