Ghana has unequivocally rejected MTN Ghana’s request for a GH¢20 million support package to assist returning Ghanaians from South Africa, a decision made following the escalating xenophobic attacks targeting African migrants, particularly Ghanaians, within the region.
MTN Chairman Dr. Ishmael Yamson stated that the company had doubled its initial GH¢10 million commitment to facilitate the rebuilding of lives following the repatriation of over 1,600 Ghanaians from South Africa since May 2026.
Initially, MTN had allocated GH¢10 million to welcome the returnees, but later decided to double the amount for longer-term support, a shift Dr. Yamson emphasized during an interview with Joy News on August 26th. He stated that the board immediately prioritized establishing a GH¢20 million fund to address the needs of the affected individuals.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the government had already established adequate financial provision for the evacuation and reintegration of these nationals, a commitment that remains unwavering following the decision to decline MTN’s offer.
In a statement released on Wednesday, August 26th, the Ministry explained that the government’s stance had been communicated to MTN and its CEO during a meeting with Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. The Ministry reiterated its commitment to providing comprehensive financial support for every Ghanaian brought back from harm’s way, emphasizing that the government remains fully dedicated to the current humanitarian evacuations and reintegration processes.
Furthermore, the Ministry pledged to publish a detailed account of the evacuation costs once the exercise is completed, “in the interest of transparency and accountability.”
The Ministry also acknowledged that the recent decision follows a series of attacks in South Africa targeting African migrants, including Ghanaians, prompting Ghana to implement measures to support their reintegration and strengthen their safety. The Ministry further stated that the attacks highlight the need for increased diplomatic efforts and safeguards to protect vulnerable communities within the region.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the government is committed to the welfare of all Ghanaians, highlighting the crucial role of the evacuation and reintegration process in fostering stability and security within the nation. The ongoing evacuation efforts continue to be a significant undertaking, with more than 1,600 Ghanaians already returned to Ghana since May 2026, according to the Ministry’s official reports.
