Ghana’s history is punctuated by periods of political upheaval, and one such instance is the brief but significant presidency of Nii Amaa Ollennu, a figure who served just 24 days in August 1970. This is a story rarely discussed, overshadowed by the longer reigns of many of Ghana’s past leaders, yet one that remains a surprisingly impactful chapter in the nation’s political narrative.

Nii Amaa Ollennu, born on May 21, 1906, in Accra, initially pursued legal studies at Accra High School and the Presbyterian Training College in Akropong, where he earned a law degree in 1940. Before his appointment as acting president, he had already established a distinguished legal career, rising to the position of Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana in 1962, a role he held until 1966. His legal expertise extended beyond the courtroom, encompassing scholarly work on African land tenure systems, which he later became an Honorary Professor of Law at the University of Ghana.

The appointment of Ollennu as acting president was a critical moment, coinciding with the final stages of Ghana’s return to civilian rule following the tumultuous period of the Gold Coast Legislative Assembly. Lieutenant General A.A. Afrifa, as the acting president, appointed him to oversee the transition, and Ollennu served from August 7th to August 31st, 1970.

His presidency was remarkably brief, lasting just 24 days – a tenure that was deliberately engineered to minimize its long-term impact on public memory. The historical record often downplays his office, frequently omitting his presence from the list of Ghana’s presidents, a practice that highlights a deliberate effort to obscure a significant, though brief, period in the nation’s history.

Ollennu’s role was primarily as a caretaker, acting as Chairman of the Presidential Commission, a vital position designed to guide Ghana through the final stages of its transition to civilian rule. This commission’s mandate was to steer the country through the critical period of returning to civilian control, and Ollennu’s appointment was a strategic decision intended to ensure a smooth and stable transition.

During his presidency, he was known for his decisive and no-nonsense approach to rulings, evidenced by a widely referenced 1958 case where he sentenced a Takoradi man to four years in prison for using three different aliases to escape custody and attempt a break-in. This act, though small in scale, served as a potent illustration of his firm hand and his role as a legal arbiter.

Ollennu’s life extended beyond his presidency, and his daughter, Amerley Awua-Asamoa, served as Ghana’s Ambassador to Denmark from 2017 to 2021, while a relative, Ashitey Trebi-Ollennu, went on to become a robotics engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, working on the Mars Rover and InSight missions.

Despite his relatively short tenure, Nii Amaa Ollennu’s legacy continues to be recognized, and his contribution to Ghana’s political history is a testament to the complexities of a nation’s transition to democracy. His brief presidency serves as a stark reminder of the crucial, and often overlooked, moments that shape the course of history.”

The story of Nii Amaa Ollennu is one of understated significance, a footnote in the grand narrative of Ghana’s leadership, but one that underscores the enduring impact of a legal mind and a determined spirit during a pivotal moment in the country’s history.
