The Interior Ministry has formally launched ‘TraffiTech-GH’, a groundbreaking technology-driven traffic enforcement system, marking a significant step in Ghana’s ongoing efforts to bolster road safety and combat reckless driving. Announced during a press conference on Monday, August 24th, by Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, TraffiTech-GH represents a multi-faceted approach to identify, monitor, and penalize motorists who violate road traffic regulations.
The initiative centers around the deployment of a sophisticated surveillance network utilizing a range of monitoring devices across major roads and intersections. Minister Mohammed-Mubarak explained that the system incorporates fixed camera installations, mobile vehicle-mounted cameras, handheld devices, and radar systems, ensuring comprehensive coverage. ‘This isn’t just about catching offenders; it’s about proactively monitoring traffic flow,’ he stated.
The core functionality of TraffiTech-GH involves automatic evidence generation. A key component of the system is the subsequent generation of electronic notices, which contain detailed information about the offense, the applicable penalty, and instructions for payment. ‘The evidence is revealed through a back office control room after the offenders receive electronic notices with details of the offences, penalty and payment process on their phones,’ Minister Mohammed-Mubarak emphasized.
The Minister further outlined the system’s intended purpose: to strengthen enforcement of existing regulations, deter irresponsible driving, and ultimately reduce road crashes and fatalities. The Ministry anticipates that the system will cover over 47 traffic offenses, representing a substantial investment in road safety. ‘This is a critical step in minimizing the carnage on our roads, as it is covering over 47 offences,’ he asserted.
The implementation of TraffiTech-GH is a collaborative effort, spearheaded by the Ghana Police Service, utilizing a robust digital monitoring framework. The system is designed to reduce direct interaction between motorists and police officers, potentially minimizing roadside disputes and facilitating faster fine collection. The system’s data collection and analysis capabilities are expected to be integrated with the national traffic management system, providing a continuous stream of insights for improved traffic management strategies.
