Aduana FC Chief Atta Poku has lauded the government’s renewed focus on bolstering sports infrastructure, characterizing it as a pivotal ‘game changer’ for Ghana’s football landscape. The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, recently announced a revised plan to construct mini stadia across the nation, expanding the project from the initial six to ten facilities. Speaking on the matter at the Ghana Football Association’s 32nd Ordinary Congress, Poku emphasized the critical impact of readily available, high-quality stadiums on the development of the domestic football league. He stated, ‘We’ve seen venues that have been approved and venues that have not been approved. Now, if you have a stadium in Sunyani, if you have a stadium in Koforidua, if you have a stadium in Kumasi, if you have a stadium in Wa, it improves the league significantly.’ According to Poku, these benefits extend beyond simply providing venues for league matches, encompassing a significant boost to the quality of football played in Ghana, as well as fostering better opportunities for talent identification and development. He further highlighted the importance of improved infrastructure, stating, ‘Infrastructure is the game changer. And if you have the right infrastructure, we are going to improve.’ Poku stressed the need for Ghana to prioritize and invest further in its football infrastructure, emphasizing the vital role of government support. He also acknowledged the government’s willingness to continue projects initiated by previous administrations, stressing the significance of completing existing initiatives rather than repeatedly starting new ones. ‘We couldn’t complete it. And the president has assured that he’s going to complete that. We would also appeal to them that they should complete it,’ Poku asserted. The Aduana FC chief also welcomed the government’s commitment to continue infrastructure projects, highlighting the importance of finishing existing projects to strengthen the Ghana Premier League, thereby reducing the reliance on a limited number of certified stadiums. Poku indicated that the successful completion of these projects would provide a tangible demonstration of the government’s dedication to football development. ‘At the time, we’ll go back in time and say that, look, the minister came to Congress for the first time and said that there was going to be this infrastructure and it is there,’ he said. Poku believes expanding the number of infrastructure projects across the country would significantly strengthen the Ghana Premier League, offering clubs greater access to quality facilities and reducing the reliance on the few certified stadiums currently available. Meanwhile, Aduana FC will open their campaign with an away game against Heart of Lions at the Kpando Sports Stadium.” The government’s revised plan, Poku noted, is a crucial step in ensuring the long-term sustainability and competitiveness of Ghana’s football ecosystem. The statement underscores the importance of continued investment in football infrastructure as a key element of Ghana’s national development strategy.
