The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ahafo Region has issued a formal demand for an immediate apology and retraction from Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Joseph Akparibo following a statement alleging the region’s creation under Akufo-Addo was ‘useless’ and of no benefit to its inhabitants. The demand was made at a press conference in Goaso, where the NPP’s Ahafo Regional Communication Officer, Alfred Asiedu, condemned the MCE’s remarks as unacceptable and of profound concern. The party contends that the creation of the Ahafo Region under Akufo-Addo has demonstrably accelerated development and delivered significant benefits to residents across various sectors, including improved infrastructure and economic opportunities. Specifically, the NPP highlights the impact of the region’s formation on local businesses and employment figures, citing statistics showing a significant increase in economic activity in the region since 2014, according to a report commissioned by the NPP. Addressing the media, the NPP Ahafo Regional Communication Officer, Alfred Asiedu, stated that the creation of the region had been instrumental in boosting the region’s economic prospects, stating, ‘The creation of the region was a strategic move designed to stimulate growth and deliver essential services to the people, and the MCE’s claims are a blatant distortion of reality.’ He further emphasized the positive impact on the region’s infrastructure, including improvements to roads and sanitation, contributing to a higher quality of life for residents. However, the MCE’s assertions, which were widely circulated on social media and in local media, have been met with considerable criticism from political analysts and community leaders, who argue they are undermining the region’s progress. The NPP is now actively pursuing a petition to President John Dramani Mahama, demanding that the MCE retract his statement and offer a sincere and unqualified apology to the people of the Ahafo Region. The party has also initiated a series of meetings with traditional leaders and religious figures to pressure the MCE to reconsider his remarks. Meanwhile, the NPP Communication Officer for the Asunafo North Constituency, Kobby Nimako Mensah, has voiced their concern, stating that the MCE’s statement is an insult to the people of the region and should not be tolerated. He appealed to President Mahama to address the situation and ensure the MCE apologizes to the people of the region and retracts his inflammatory remarks. The issue of fruit ripening, particularly concerning traders, has also been raised as a contributing factor to the alleged chemical manipulation of the region’s agricultural output, prompting calls for an investigation. The NLA has urged workers to call off their strike, returning to negotiation tables, reflecting the deep-seated frustration felt by the community regarding the MCE’s actions and the perceived lack of accountability.
