The Kyebi Government Hospital, also known as the Abuakwa South Municipal Hospital, in the Abuakwa South Municipality of the Eastern Region, is currently facing a significant operational challenge: the prolonged absence of its oxygen plant. This critical infrastructure failure has been ongoing for over three years, posing a considerable burden on medical staff and impacting patient care within the region. The situation has prompted a crucial and costly relocation to Koforidua to procure essential oxygen cylinders, a move Dr. Isaac Antwi, the Medical Superintendent, revealed during a recent meeting with Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Dr Kingsley Agyemang, regarding medical equipment intended to bolster healthcare delivery at the facility.
Dr. Antwi explained that the lack of operational oxygen capacity has become a persistent problem, particularly when treating patients who depend on supplemental oxygen. The hospital, serving as a major referral center for several neighboring municipalities and districts within the Eastern Region, routinely sees hundreds of patients daily, highlighting the severity of this disruption. The hospital’s primary role is to provide vital medical services to a diverse patient population, and the interruption of oxygen delivery directly impacts the quality and timeliness of care.
Estimating the cost of repairing the oxygen plant at a staggering GH¢500,000, Dr. Antwi has issued an urgent appeal to philanthropic organizations, corporate entities, and the public to mobilize support. He emphasizes the critical need to restore this essential facility to ensure uninterrupted patient care. The plant’s malfunction represents a substantial obstacle to the hospital’s ability to meet its obligations and maintain a robust healthcare system within the region.
Furthermore, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang announced that his office is actively pursuing the acquisition of a dedicated dialysis center for the hospital, a key requirement for continued patient care. He also revealed ongoing construction at Asiakwa, a constituency in the region, to address the acute shortage of accommodation for health workers. This initiative aims to provide a more sustainable and comfortable environment for the dedicated professionals who work tirelessly to deliver healthcare to the community.
The donated medical equipment package included a diverse array of critical resources. Three suction machines, three electronic weighing scales with height measurement, two pulse oximeters, ten blood pressure machines, 10 thermometers, three electronic patient monitors, 20 wheelchairs, several boxes of examination gloves, and a Cardiotocography (CTG) machine were provided. These instruments represent a significant investment in improving patient outcomes and ensuring the hospital’s operational capacity. The hospital is committed to a swift resolution to this critical issue, recognizing the vital role of a functional oxygen plant in supporting its mission to deliver quality healthcare to the community it serves.
