Gary, Indiana, is grappling with a devastating 12-day outage that has left thousands without power, a stark reminder of the lasting impact of a severe storm that struck the region on August 11th. The situation has escalated from a localized disruption to a widespread crisis, forcing residents to endure prolonged hardship and raising serious concerns about the region’s resilience to extreme weather events.

Terry Dubois, a 77-year-old resident of Gary, is one of tens of thousands currently without electricity. He relies heavily on friends for food, having recently received a power bank from his son to charge his phone and maintain contact with the outside world. “I’ve never seen a storm like that in my entire life,” Dubois stated to the BBC, describing the storm as a ‘sheer wall of wind’ that reached a peak of 99 mph.

The storm, which included significant flooding and tornadoes across the Midwest, particularly affecting Chicago and Indiana, has caused widespread damage. The former industrial town, situated along the southern shore of Lake Michigan, has borne the brunt of the impact. Wind gusts peaked at 99 mph, according to the National Weather Service, significantly impacting infrastructure and causing considerable damage.

The outage, initially anticipated to last five to ten minutes, has persisted for 12 days, with power restoration efforts reaching over 345,000 customers, with almost 30,000 still without power as of Sunday morning. Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) reports that this is a significant deviation from typical storm-related outages, which are uncommon in the region.

As a result of the storm, a surge of global food charity World Central Kitchen has arrived to assist those without access to food. The situation is compounded by the fact that the region has a high poverty rate, with approximately one-third of its residents living in poverty, according to US Census data. Furthermore, residents are facing significant challenges, including the inability to refrigerate medication and the precariousness of wheelchair users navigating stairs in the absence of working lifts.

Local residents have also launched a class-action lawsuit against Nipsco, accusing the utility company of failing to manage the fallen power lines. Jack Tipold, a resident, stated, “At night, we’re sweating, we’re irritable, we have children to look out for, elderly people who need electricity for oxygen tanks. It’s not OK for us to continually be in survival mode.”

NIPSCO has denied wrongdoing and has stated it would vigorously defend itself in court. Faith leaders held a press conference outside a local church, urging those with the power to release resources to those in need, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. Governor Mike Braun acknowledged the delays and requested a more significant disaster declaration from FEMA, which could unlock further assistance.

The situation is exacerbated by climate change, which is leading to increasingly severe and frequent extreme weather events. Experts warn that these power outages are likely to become more common and prolonged, posing a significant threat to regional infrastructure and the well-being of residents. The prolonged outage underscores the importance of preparedness and resilience in the face of evolving weather patterns.
