The jury for Lil Durk’s murder-for-hire trial in Los Angeles has reportedly been seated, with the process expected to continue for at least three weeks. According to KESQ, United States District Judge Michael Fitzgerald oversaw the selection and final seating of 12 jurors and four alternates in court at the end of Friday (August 21st).
This brought an end to an unexpectedly complicated jury selection in Durk’s trial in Los Angeles. One of around 80 prospective jurors stated that Durk and his codefendants looked guilty, and the process slowed down. Elsewhere, prospective jurors answered questions from lawyers about their thoughts on gangster rap and the Chicago rapper’s musical style, which has been widely discussed within the music industry. The selection process involved a series of questions about the lyrical content of the music, with one woman reportedly stating that the music is suggestive of ‘violence’ and another woman expressed concerns about the genre’s potential to affect her impartiality. A defense attorney reportedly asked potential jurors for their thoughts on music ‘that’s not Peter, Paul and Mary or Karen Carpenter,’ with lyrics that are difficult to understand. Further, a man admitted to having ‘negative connotations’ associated with rap, and another prospective juror said he had no right to ‘judge whether rap is good or bad,’ instead being there to determine criminal guilt.
The prosecution presented various lyrics, music videos, and other materials to the court, including the 2021 ‘Pissed Me Off’ visual. There are also ongoing debates about evidence proposals regarding cell phones and other material, with the judge largely siding with the prosecution on some of these matters. Lil Durk’s supporters have also been criticized for distributing ‘Free Durk’ postcards in the courtroom, prompting the judge to issue a warning about potential contempt of court.
