Akyem Atobriso, in the Kwaebibrem Municipality of the Eastern Region, is facing a dire crisis following the reported destruction of over 100 acres of farmland by illegal mining, a practice known as galamsey. This alarming development, confirmed by local authorities and residents, has significant ramifications for the community’s agricultural stability and the livelihoods of countless farmers.

The situation began approximately six months ago, with residents reporting consistent incursions by illegal miners into previously cultivated land. Initial reports suggested a limited impact, but recent investigations reveal a far more substantial and escalating problem. The affected farms encompass a significant portion of the community’s agricultural landscape, primarily dedicated to cocoa, oil palm, cocoyam (taro), and cassava cultivation.

Amankrado of Akyem Atobriso, Nene Tenkyeme III, addressed the community, expressing deep concern over the escalating crisis. He vehemently stated that illegal miners have brazenly invaded farmlands, causing substantial economic losses to farmers who depend on agriculture for their survival. ‘We have witnessed firsthand the devastation caused by these operations,’ Nene Tenkyeme III asserted. ‘The continuous mining activities are crippling our agricultural lands and threatening the future of our community.’

The residents are understandably alarmed that the galamsey activities are not only impacting yields but are also causing further soil erosion and degradation. They have repeatedly warned that continued mining operations will exacerbate the damage to the community’s farmlands and vital water resources.

Responding to the situation, the Kwaebibrem Municipal Security Council has initiated a coordinated response, including the confiscation of two excavators and other equipment suspected of being used in illegal mining operations. This action, according to the municipality, is a crucial step in curbing the practice. Emmanuel Kofi Nti, the Municipal Chief Executive, emphasized the importance of collaboration with traditional authorities across the municipality. ‘We are urging all stakeholders – including traditional leaders, farmers, and security personnel – to work together to protect our farmlands and natural resources,’ Nti stated. ‘Protecting our land and water is paramount to the well-being of our community.’

The incident is further compounded by growing concerns over the broader impact of illegal mining on agriculture, particularly within marginalized communities where farming remains a primary source of income. The widespread adoption of galamsey practices threatens the long-term sustainability of agricultural livelihoods across the region. Local agricultural experts estimate that the loss of these farmlands could result in a substantial reduction in food production and economic hardship for the entire community.

Several reports indicate that the galamsey operations are often conducted without adequate safety measures, posing a significant risk to both the miners and the surrounding environment. The long-term consequences of this unsustainable practice are deeply worrying, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive regulatory measures and sustainable land management strategies to safeguard the future of Akyem Atobriso and its agricultural heritage.
