The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formally concluded the nomination window for its 2026 National Officers Elections, with a remarkable total of 50 aspirants purchasing or collecting forms to contest nine distinct positions across the nation.
The National Officers Elections Committee (NOEC) announced this closure on Saturday, August 22nd, describing the exercise as successfully completed and peaceful. The closure marks a pivotal stage in the party’s internal election process, with a significant focus now shifting to the comprehensive filing of completed nomination forms.
The National Vice Chairperson position currently attracts the highest number of aspirants, with 13 individuals selecting forms, followed by the National Organiser position with eight. Six aspirants picked forms for the National Youth Organiser position, while five each are seeking to become National Chairperson and National Nasara Organiser.
Six aspirants selected to become National Chairperson and National Treasurer positions, while five each are seeking to become National Women Organiser.
The positions of General Secretary and National Treasurer attracted four aspirants each, while three people picked forms for National Communications Director. However, NOEC emphasized that the purchase or collection of a nomination form does not automatically equate to a valid candidate.
‘The Committee wishes to emphasize that the purchase or collection of a nomination form does not, by itself, constitute a valid nomination or candidature,’ the statement read. ‘An aspirant becomes a nominee only upon the proper filing of the completed nomination form and the accompanying documentation within the prescribed filing period, subject thereafter to the vetting and other processes provided for under the Party’s Constitution and the applicable election regulations,’ the statement continued.
The filing of completed nomination forms will commence on Sunday, August 23rd, 2026, and close on Saturday, August 29th, 2026.
NOEC has established arrangements for the orderly receipt, registration and secure custody of all nominations.
Following the filing closes, the nominees will undergo vetting from Monday, August 31st to Thursday, September 3rd, 2026.
The vetting schedule will see presidential aspirants for the National Chairperson, General Secretary, and National Treasurer positions vetted on Monday.
The National Vice Chairperson aspirants will be vetted on Tuesday, followed by National Organiser and National Youth Organiser aspirants on Wednesday.
The final day, Thursday, will be dedicated to the National Communications Director, National Nasara Organiser and National Women Organiser positions.
NOEC has also explained why it has not announced a date for balloting.
‘The Committee said the decision is deliberate, arguing that it is necessary to complete the filing, vetting and possible appeals processes before fixing a final date for the election,’ the Committee stated. ‘It said the final list of candidates can only be determined after the vetting process and the resolution of any appeals,’ the statement concluded. ‘Fixing a balloting date prematurely could therefore result in its postponement or suspension should an unresolved appeal affect the list of candidates for any position,’ the Committee assured aspirants and their supporters that they will receive adequate notice of the date, venue, time and procedures.
The Committee also pledged to conduct the balloting process transparently and fairly.”
This nomination window represents a significant step in the party’s internal electoral process, with a focus on ensuring the integrity and legitimacy of the upcoming election.
NOEC will announce a firm balloting date once the field of candidates has been sufficiently settled and assured aspirants that they will receive adequate notice of the date, venue, time and procedures.
