A 15-hour power interruption is expected to impact numerous communities across Accra this Sunday, August 23rd, as GridCo engineers begin repairs following a significant incident involving a damaged transmission tower. The outage, scheduled to run from 3:00 AM to 6:00 PM, is anticipated to affect a substantial area of the capital, spanning both residential neighborhoods and key commercial districts.
The incident occurred on the 161kV Tema-Achimota transmission line, located near Ashaiman, where a fuel tanker caught fire while welding repairs. This immediate damage to a crucial component of the high-voltage network has triggered the power disruption. GridCo, the Ghana Grid Company, stated that the fault is a result of the extended welding work, a situation that has resulted in a significant risk to the electrical infrastructure.
The repairs are being undertaken by GridCo’s technical teams, and the company has emphasized the importance of a full operational window to ensure the safety and integrity of the tower replacement process. GridCo is collaborating with ECG to mitigate the impact on customers in the affected regions, acknowledging the inconvenience this disruption will cause.
The affected zones, as identified by GridCo, encompass a wide geographical range, including Nima, Kanda (Highway and Estate), Kokomlemle, Sulana, Circle, Madina, Okponglo, Cantonments, Osu Oxford Street, Mallam Atta Market, parts of Ridge, Labone, and Teshie Rasta Road, amongst others. GridCo has categorized these areas into two zones: the first covers Nima, Kanda (Highway and Estate), Kokomlemle, Sulana, Circle, Madina, Okponglo, Cantonments, Osu Oxford Street, Mallam Atta Market, parts of Ridge, Labone, and Teshie Rasta Road, and the second zone includes James Town, Mamprobi, Chorkor, Sempe, parts of Kaneshie, North Industrial Area, Okaishie, Agbogbloshie, Kantamanto, Adabraka, Tesano, Santana Market, parts of Alajo, and Asylum Down. The grid company has apologized for the disruption, acknowledging that it will significantly impact residents and businesses.
