The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has announced that less than 20 kilometers of clearing work remains before the Accra-Kumasi Expressway project reaches Kumasi, solidifying its progress towards completion. The project, a significant investment aimed at bolstering connectivity between Accra and Kumasi, has demonstrated considerable advancement, with only a short stretch remaining before the expressway seamlessly integrates with the Kumasi Orbiter, also known as the Kumasi Ring Road.
Mr. Agbodza stated that the project has progressed significantly, with a mere 20 kilometers still to be completed. He clarified that the expressway is currently operating at a point where it’s just a short stretch before linking up with the Kumasi Ring Road, effectively completing the initial phase of the project’s route.
‘We have less than 20 kilometers. I’m sure we have perhaps around 10, 15 kilometers to hit Kumasi itself,’ Mr. Agbodza said on Friday. He emphasized the importance of this milestone as a key step in the overall project’s timeline.
The Accra-Kumasi Expressway is a flagship road project designed to enhance travel routes and stimulate economic activity along the corridor, linking two major cities. The project’s success is being celebrated with significant progress, with the contractor, Kofi Job, demonstrating effective execution of the remaining work. According to the Minister, the contractor is nearing completion of one section of the work before shifting his focus to the other side of the road.
‘He’s almost done with one leg of the work, and then the one to the right-hand side is where he’ll be working on,’ Mr. Agbodza explained. He confirmed that the remaining section is close to where the expressway will connect with the Kumasi Orbiter, a crucial point in the project’s design. He expressed gratitude to the Ghana Armed Forces for their crucial support in clearing the land, and acknowledged the continued support of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who has previously pushed for the completion of roads within the Kumasi enclave, particularly to support the Sewua Hospital’s regional hospital function.
This project represents a substantial investment in infrastructure, and the Minister underscored the importance of maintaining the project’s momentum. The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has also expressed his support for road development within the Ashanti Region, recognizing the vital role infrastructure plays in supporting the region’s growth and prosperity.”
