The Saglemi Housing Project, a long-awaited development stalled for over a year, is experiencing a resurgence under the leadership of LMI Holdings, a developer signaling a commitment to delivering the first 700 housing units by March 2027, with a full 1,500 units slated for completion by December 2027. This significant undertaking represents a crucial component of the government’s Green Digital City vision, which aims to extend from the Dawa Industrial Park to the Volta Lake, focusing on sustainable urban development and economic growth.
The project’s initial setback was largely attributed to a change in government and subsequent legal and investigative processes, halting construction and leaving the site vulnerable to extensive vandalism. Extensive damage to the estate, including theft of electrical cables, wash basins, fittings, bulbs, and underground telecommunications cables, underscored the vulnerability of the site. The Chairman and CEO of LMI Holdings, Kojo Aduhene, recently made a public pledge during a recent inspection to turn things around and deliver the results expected, emphasizing a renewed dedication to the project’s completion.
Mr. Aduhene stated, ‘By March 2027, we will have 700 housing units ready and I want to say to everyone: take me at my word,’ pledging full accountability for the commitment. He further confirmed that the company is prepared to begin the sales process for prospective homeowners, indicating a significant level of enthusiasm for the project.
The project’s progress has been bolstered by significant investments, including the securing of materials, ongoing site clearing, and the installation of modern electrical cabling. Construction is progressing steadily, with a focus on providing reliable infrastructure, including the installation of high-speed internet connectivity extending directly into the estate. LMI Holdings has also announced the laying of fibre-optic cables, leveraging Google’s existing digital infrastructure, to provide residents with high-speed internet access, and a communication system to connect residents directly with estate security and management services.
Furthermore, the company is commencing a railway connection linking Saglemi with the Dawa Industrial Zone and the wider Tema enclave, a vital component for efficient logistics and workforce mobility. This railway aims to improve access to employment centers, particularly for workers in Ashaiman, Afienya, and neighboring communities, while facilitating the movement of goods across the region. The railway will also benefit workers in the Dawa Industrial Park and surrounding areas, contributing to the economic vitality of the area.
President Mahama expressed confidence that the redevelopment would transform Saglemi into a modern and desirable residential community, fitting into the government’s Green Digital City vision which extends from the Dawa Industrial Park to the Volta Lake. He urged prospective homeowners to register promptly once the sales portal opens, noting that the houses are likely to be in high demand due to growing industrial activity around Tema and the Dawa Industrial Park. He concluded by stating that Saglemi has been strategically incorporated into the government’s broader Green Digital City initiative, aiming to enhance urban living and promote sustainable development.”
“The broader vision is to enable hardworking Ghanaians to live in decent homes at Saglemi and commute efficiently to major employment centres rather than depend on overcrowded settlements and long road journeys,” he said.
