The Swift telescope, a pivotal instrument since 2004, has been in operation since its initial mission, specializing in gamma-ray bursts – the most energetic electromagnetic explosions known in the universe – and designed to last just two years. Now, nearing the end of its operational lifespan, the telescope continues to explore some of the most violent phenomena in the cosmos, a stark contrast to its original purpose. The telescope’s original mission was predicated on a relatively short operational lifespan, a crucial consideration given the challenges of space-based observation. Over two decades, it has continued to provide valuable data, though its trajectory has shifted significantly. The telescope’s original orbit was intended to remain stable, but a dramatic change in solar activity during 2024 dramatically altered projections. Increased solar radiation rapidly heated and expanded Earth’s upper atmosphere, causing a measurable increase in drag on the satellite, accelerating its descent. Estimates initially placed the likely reentry point before the end of 2026, a timeframe significantly shorter than originally anticipated. NASA, recognizing Swift’s limited time, decided to attempt a rescue maneuver – a concept that was surprisingly complex to execute. The plan involved a robotic mission to intercept Swift, capture it with mechanical arms, and use its own thrusters to raise the observatory to a safer orbit, where it could continue operating. The decision led to NASA’s collaboration with the company Katalyst Space Technologies and its LINK spacecraft, launched on July 3, 2026. However, problems arose immediately after the launch; the spacecraft’s attitude control system, crucial for maintaining stability, suffered critical failures, necessitating weeks of intensive engineering work to regain control. On Wednesday, NASA announced the cancellation of the rescue mission, stating that the decision stemmed from control system issues with the spacecraft. LINK will no longer capture Swift or raise its orbit. The spacecraft will continue to approach the observatory to conduct demonstrations of rendezvous, navigation, and close-proximity operations. The agency hopes to utilize this attempt to gather data that can be applied to future missions aimed at repairing, relocating, or extending the lifespan of satellites in orbit. Isaacman, NASA administrator, explained that this decision was a result of the need to allow the team to continue conducting scientific work while advancing capabilities for satellite servicing. The agency’s intention was to learn everything it could from LINK’s attempt to catch up with Swift and apply those lessons to future missions. The agency warned of the observatory’s vulnerability to capture and repair in orbit, while acknowledging the spacecraft’s development was intended to advance capabilities for servicing satellites in the future. “This is not the outcome we were working toward, but it does not change why this mission was worth attempting,” Isaacman emphasized. The agency had previously warned that Swift was not designed to be captured or repaired in orbit, while LINK was developed against the clock in response to the observatory’s rapid descent. “NASA should be willing to move quickly and take smart risks when the potential return is worth it, and that is exactly what we did with this mission,” Isaacman stated. Without intervention to raise its orbit, Swift will continue to lose altitude until it reaches the denser layers of the atmosphere. During reentry, much of the observatory will be destroyed by intense heating and aerodynamic forces. The agency estimates that Swift will likely re-enter the atmosphere before the end of the year.
